During my cousin’s wedding, my mobile phone, worth approximately โ‚น15k, was lost/stolen around 1AM. I realized it was missing when I returned home, which is near the venue, for a quick outfit change. Upon discovering the loss, I immediately asked my uncle to check the spot where I had been sitting, but he found nothing. Due to the busy nature of the event, I could not ask for additional help at the time.

Within 30 minutes, I returned to the venue and thoroughly searched the area. Kept calling. My phone has a battery life lasting approx 2 days on standby, remained switched on until about 5-6 AM. After that it said, “Your call cannot be forwarded”. The following morning, I reviewed the available CCTV footage, but the quality was unclear but I observed 2 men in white shirts approach the table, one of them appeared to slide something into his pocket, which I suspect could have been my phone.

2 days later, after gathering the necessary documents, including the phone’s invoice, I filed an eFIR and registered the lost device on the CEIR portal. Today, my mother received a call from a police officer requesting that we visit the police station and accompany them to the location of the incident for further investigation. My mother informed the officer that the phone was 5 years old and, not wanting to burden them, declined to appear as she is also busy with her work.

The officer called again, explaining that filing an eFIR initiates a formal investigation process. He said that if we did not want to proceed with an investigation, we should have filed a ‘lost mobile’ complaint instead. According to him, they need to visit the location, record a brief video of me narrating the incident, and only then can they place the phone under surveillance. He also mentioned that the case may go to court??!

My question is why the phone can’t be immediately placed under surveillance and whether these procedural delays are standard. Is this about money any risk of being harassed or blackmailed, as there is sensitive information?

ADVOCATE HERE. Why do you want E-FIR to be withdrawn?
