February 14, 2025 at 8:06 pmThis is only for the lawyers here.Since AI is very good at summarisation I see good case of sharing summaries of long form articles with others .
But is sharing such content legal ?
Assume that the content is behind a pay wall and requires a subscription. Also the author hasn’t given me any authority to reproduce the article. So in summary my question is
– Is it legal to share summary of articles which are otherwise paid
– If not summaries then can we share a review or perhaps a writeup about the same topic and quote excerpt from the article -

February 15, 2025 at 4:48 amIt becomes a problem when you start selling them or marketing them as your own. Most paid online articles generally are smart enough not to let you copy paste stuff. But yeah if you start selling them as your own it’s an issue. It’s like being sued because you cited a paid article in your research paper. It won’t work, much less be enforced because how will you? You’re fine.

February 15, 2025 at 6:06 amThere are a few publications like Ken , Capable , Arc etc that write paid articles but there subscription cost is out of reach of most folks.I have gone through their terms and conditions and it mentions that they do not allow anyone to use any part of the articles without authorisation. Is that really enforceable ? As far as I was aware one can share reviews of article or quote excerpts from it without violating the copyright laws.

February 15, 2025 at 6:46 amActually I did not understand your comment so I was trying to clarify my doubts.Basically you are saying that one can use the material to write review or quote and excerpt even if the publication clearly mentions in their TnC that no part of the publication can be used for any purpose without authorisation.

February 15, 2025 at 7:12 amYes. If you’re still scared you can go ahead and ask them for their permission when you want to use it to cite papers or articles. But there really shouldn’t be an issue.
