UI’m currently interning under a Supreme Court judge in India, and I’ve noticed something that’s been bothering me. In the judge’s office, there are around 18 pictures of him with Modi, which makes up about 80% of the total pictures on display. Additionally, this judge was appointed by the government.
I can’t help but feel like this blurs the lines between the judiciary and the legislature. It seems like the judge has an apparent inclination towards a particular political figure and a set ideology (which you can make out by his judgements and speeches), and he’s not hesitant to showcase it. This makes me wonder about the impartiality that’s expected from someone in such a crucial position.
Am I overthinking this? Or is there a legitimate concern here about the independence of the judiciary being compromised or perceived as compromised?

RYes it does. And it’s such a bad reflection of the duties he is entitled to fulfill. There were similar questions when ex CJI invited the PM to his house for a festival.

Personal or from functions.
Any reflects on judgements? Nature?

UJudges office located at his residence, some personal some from function, the speeches the judge has made are very problematic, the judgments show a clear bias.
Also i know they are subject to approval from the government. But he was not recommended by the collegium but the government itself-
AHaven’t heard about any controversial speech by siting sc judge. Further, no judge is appointed without collegium.

BHaving an inclination or not towards a certain political ideology does not necessarily warrant an inference that their decision would also be reflecting the same. At the end they’re a human as well, and you can’t just stay in the absolute middle of all the things and have a neutral opinion about everything.

BThe job description of judgeship is not to be partial in their verdicts. I don’t think it’s about having 0 opinions and interests about anything in their life.

EA little context would help. Are those pictures taken in some official function with PM or was it a political function? If its a political function then these pictures belong to a closet and not in chambers

SI think each individual has a certain ideology. So even judges abide by those ideologies as a human. Those ideologies may reflect on their profession also. These ideologies makes any person closer to certain affiliations that promote or cater to those ideologies, after all it’s human nature. Of course these ideologies are reflected in the persons’ day to day lives, so it may reflect on their professional front also.
