The 2012 Sowjanya case from Karnataka remains one of the most horrifying yet neglected crimes in India. A 17 year-old student was brutally raped and murdered near Dharmasthala, with severe injuries, a broken ribcage, and mud inside her private part.

The case was handed over to the CBI, which named Santhosh Rao as the prime suspect, but in June 2023, he was acquitted due to lack of evidence. This verdict reignited protests, with many including Sowjanya’s family believing the real culprits were shielded due to their influential connections.

Recently, Kannada YouTuber Sameer MD released a viral video on February 27, alleging that powerful figures were involved in covering up the crime. His claims have sparked online debates, but legal action has been taken against him instead of the accused.

Given the lack of justice after more than a decade, do you think the case should be reopened for reinvestigation?

What legal options do Sowjanya’s family and activists have? And what does this case reveal about India’s criminal justice system and media silence on powerful individuals?

Our justice system is a joke where even anti sikh riots culprits are not yet punished nor ajmer scandal case and you expect justice from them where even police officials act as predators to snatch money from everyone

The questions raised by Sameer are strong. These questions genuinely needs answer. However in my opinion, none of these allegations are likely to sustain in court. He does not have any factual evidence. Even some of the facts he claimed were taken from the high court judgement. All his allegations are circumstantial and are very unlikely to hold in court. Based on the available evidence, only thing that can be proved is lapse in duty of police and law enforcement agencies. Concerned officer maybe suspended for few months. Even if the police accept the role of “powerful” I don’t think he has any evidence of it. If at all police has maintained call recordings or other proof for intimidating, there seems no way to reach the culprits. Some new evidence must appear as miracle, else chances are glare

What do you think will happen? The powerful family in Dharmasthala will be put in jail? Lol you’re wrong even if u have slightest thought of that.

INJUSTICE HAPPENS AND A POOR FAMILY SHOULD ONLY LEARN TO ACCEPT IT NOT TRY TO FIGHT IT.

There are 1 billion people in India, out of that there are 10 good people, even those 10 people aren’t rich. So if they aren’t rich they’re aren’t powerful. Harsh reality but true

Sowjanya will never get justice. The people involved in sowjanya murder are top Bjp leaders. Until Modi Bjp is in central government sowjanya case is closed no justice will be delivered.

Should we blame the Congress for the mass rapes in Ajmer? I don’t know who is involved. You seem to know. In any case, delays and turning witnesses goes on because our system of criminal law has been defunct for decades now.

Even if Congress came in power or even if Britishers take the country back under their control still nothing will happen.

Law is made to protect the rich and powerful from those who follow them that is us.

it’s the same as rjd rape case In Bihar, during lalu yadav jungle raj, where rjd party member raped wife of IAS, and a model was raped AND murdered AND his boyfriend too murdered.
the people who rape are now living free , court aquits them.

It took 11 years to get a verdict. In those 11 years, witnesses can be paid off or scared off. The number of witnesses who turn hostile in Indian courts is off the charts. Delays directly lead to opportunities for witness tampering.

In all likelihood the case has seen numerous delays, many because the judges or the lawyers don’t show up. The case has probably been heard by multiple judges as judges are transferred or retire. The policemen who investigated the case may also have retired or moved on. It’s even possible that case files or actual evidence has been lost.

This is a common story. The sad part is that there are plenty of cases that are even older – more than 20 years old and still ongoing. What is the most damaging part of the story is that these problems aren’t even on the radar of the higher courts. They want everybody to get bail. The courts have already created ridiculous hurdles to the death penalty – hurdles that have zero basis in law. The activists who control the higher court bar association are only concerned about the rights of the accused. The victims and their families have no representation nor are their human rights of any value.

Justice left the Indian courts decades ago. Our delay prone hollow criminal law system invites extra-legal mechanisms as mobs and police deliver summary justice to the innocent and the guilty.

Don’t you think securing rights of accused is equally important. If it wasn’t there, santosh rao, who was falsely charged would have be hanged and killed. Because of the procedures, although it took 10 years, poor guy atleast got justice. Else another innocent would have been killed by police and powerfull

Of course, it’s important to protect the innocent. It’s also important to punish the guilty.

However, our judicial system is non-existent for the innocent or the guilty. It is openly manipulated for delays by criminal defendants. Witnesses turning hostile is routine. The delays are used to bribe or coerce the witnesses. When everything fails, appeal to the higher court on a frivolous ground. The higher courts will take years to hear it, while the case in the lower court grinds to a halt.

Just Google for the number of criminal cases that are still in the courts for 20 years or more. Is this justice?
