April 15, 2025 at 12:43 pmOne of my friends is stuck in a dead-end marriage. She has a 5-year-old child. Her husband is the son of a local politician and businessman (he owns a big transport business). Recently, she found out he’s having an extra-marital affair after going through his WhatsApp chats. She confronted him, but instead of owning up, he started getting more aggressive. He physically abuses her, especially when drunk. She wants a divorce, but he’s refusing, worried about social stigma if word gets out about his affair. He’s basically trapping her in the marriage.
Because of his father’s political influence, she feels like she can’t do anything. She’s scared that even if she tries to take legal action, they’ll use their power to shut her down.
What are her options in this situation? Has anyone faced something similar or has any idea what she can do?

April 15, 2025 at 12:54 pmPoliticians always have additional wives around in each town.
She should have known that before marrying. One of the first compromises you make as the wife of a politician is sharing the bed with other women.
Hopefully he doesn’t give her an STD.
Her only choices are approaching an NGO and opposition party leaders for a divorce. Or bear with it.-

April 15, 2025 at 1:00 pmControversial but true.
Powerful people looks cool from outside and people think if you get close to them than you will get many favours and dominate in the society with him by your side.
But most of the time, it’s double edged sword.-

April 15, 2025 at 2:44 pmbut why are we assuming it was a love marriage?
especially when politicians rarely do love marriages. The most likely reason was that it was a political marriage and she herself belonged to a family who does business with his family and it’s a known fact that women belonging to political families rarely have their own autonomy. -

April 15, 2025 at 2:03 pmBrilliant! She’s not even allowed to fight back.
As a woman, I shall now gracefully accept defeat—because clearly, even thinking of fighting back is no match for the mighty power of downvotes.-

April 15, 2025 at 2:33 pmas a human being, you should invest some time in your comprehension skills and not jump to false conclusions – I’m merely stating that your approach does not work anymore in India (rather than inhibiting the woman to fight back)….there are so many recent examples that I cannot even begin to formulate how to present them to you but let me try – how many bridges collapsed in the past couple of years? how many people were mowed down by the rich taking joy rides in their cars? still remember the billboard incident, the driving off bridge incident, and so on? almost every few days there is a case of someone being brutally assaulted (rape and/or murder)….people are dropping left and right – who was held accountable? nobodyI simply stated that these situations require alternative approaches – where I was in the wrong was that this is a legal advice sub and not general advice sub…my apologies for that!

April 15, 2025 at 2:54 pmAbsolutely, I get where you’re coming from—yes, the system is flawed and power often protects the guilty. But to say nobody is ever held accountable is inaccurate.Innocent people have fought and won, like Jessica Lal, Priyadarshini Mattoo, Bilkis Bano, Rinki Shrivastava, Satyendra Dubey? What about all these people ? Their victories weren’t easy, but they happened!! Thanks to the Judges who saw their case and their sensible decisions.
Also, hiring a private investigator and collecting solid evidence can help legally! Particularly in cases of adultery, for divorce. It 100% strengthens her position in court and adds pressure where it counts.
Alternative approaches are valid, but let’s not discourage resistance altogether..
She has a child! Some battles are worth fighting for

April 15, 2025 at 3:27 pmI agree partly, but again – see…all of your cases, to my meagre knowledge, are old cases – India of today is not the same as India of 90s….there was still hope and trust in the system (and not this is not a comment on which political party is in power – our decline has been systemic and quite some time in making)since I’ve grown up, I haven’t seen a single case of common man vs the powerful where justice prevailed (though I’m sure they exist)
you’re correct in that this is definitely fighting for – but precisely because she has a child I said hiring a PI is not a good idea…this is because her husband is a politician – I really don’t know how else this can be expressed, the word “politician” is enough to convey all the feelings

April 15, 2025 at 1:43 pmShe might meet with an accident conveniently. She should negotiate to lead her life separately, quietly at a different place without a divorce and just live quietly… and leave hubby to his own devices/ gfs.-

just a couple more months and then you’ll start with college, life would be much better once you move out

Forget good and bad and be selfish. I was in your shoes doing the right thing, there is no right thing. You have to play smart and invest emotionally on your kid. -
