CThe title. I went to SPAR, Nexus Vijaya Mall (Arcot Rd, Chennai) today and the cashier refused to bill the items (fruits) without my phone number. When I said I didn’t want to share my number, she bluntly told me that she couldn’t bill without my phone number and threw the item on the floor (at her side).
Is this legal? Why is the customer’s phone number required to purchase grocery items?

SThis shit is so common since past few years. Lifestyle, Pantaloons, ShoppersStop, McDonalds etc and many more ask for phone numbers. The frustrating part is that they assume every customer is going to provide it and is the reason, when few customer objects, the billing staff becomes clueless or says there is no other option.

WEven I faced the same while ordering at reliance smart, dominos mcd etc.. I just say 9999999999 they can’t say this isn’t your number.. this works.. tried and tested..
Reliance is one step ahead, if you choose upi they ask your number I always say card even if it’s less than 50rs bill..
Domino’s will insist you to download their app and place the order… You need not, just say them you didn’t get a phone or phone is out of battery.. want to place the order directly.
All these companies are mining our data, and sell them to different companies for profit.-
UMost of these stores have not started sending bills on the mobile number. So, do you ask for a hard copy instead (if a bill is required) or how do you get around it?

WI never take bill from supermarkets..
If it’s clothing and chances of return are there then I demand a hardcopy. Which they provide. If they say we are all digital save paper save earth etc.. you say then on the face you want to sell the goods or not?Customer is the king. Try to play that card.
Dnt fall for any discount, offers, promotions etc..

MI simply tell the cashier I don’t want to give my number and if needed they should put in any random number. They stare in shock and then they acquiesce.
The only time I’ve ever faced an issue was at Lenskart where the store girl couldn’t place the order without an OTP on my phone. I stood my ground and asked to speak with the store manager. He asked the girl to use her own number 🥴 which worked for me but I don’t think is scalable if more customers do the same.
