        Hi Reddit,

I’m looking for advice on how to handle a really upsetting situation my 19-year-old brother experienced with an airline while traveling from Bangalore to Kolkata. Here’s what happened:

        1. The flight was already delayed by over 3 hours.

        2. My brother’s carry-on luggage, including his laptop bag, weighed a total of 13 kg. Since he hadn’t checked in any baggage earlier, he offered to check in his bag instead of carrying it on board.

        3. Despite this reasonable request, the airline staff refused and insisted he pay ₹4,000 to board the flight. They threatened that if he didn’t pay, he wouldn’t be allowed to board.

My brother is a young student traveling alone, and the experience left him humiliated, anxious, and in tears. He had to call my dad to send him the money because he didn’t have enough on him.

What’s worse is that this situation could have been resolved easily if the staff had allowed him to check in his bag (especially since it was well under the limit for checked luggage). Instead, they resorted to what felt like blackmail and intimidation.

Now, we’re furious and wondering what steps we can take to hold the airline accountable for this behavior.

We don’t want anyone else to go through this kind of harassment. Has anyone faced something similar? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

        Thanks in advance.

I think we can only take out the lesson to weigh the baggage before travel from this experience.

At which point was the carry on weighed? If it was during check-in (not applicable for self check-in) then the airline is at fault. If it was afterwards, say during security check or at the gate then you can’t blame the airline. If it’s the latter then take it as a lesson and move on.

Also, I hope that your brother is aware of the carry on rules which are being enforced strictly. I won’t get into the details but that’s another area where your brother might have been at fault.
