March 29, 2025 at 5:19 pmHi so we had a tenant who was running a shady brothel in our flat.We stay in the same city but the flat location is quite far away.
We got the tenant information from a broker and this was the first time we went this route.
The neighbours complained to the police and my mother was asked to come to the station. ( I working outside India right now, so I was not involved).
The cops had the tenant, the head lady who was running it in the station already. Since the flat is iny mothers name the police were talking to her as if she was a part of it.
The tenant came forward and told them that my mother was not aware about this buisness at all and was innocent.
The cops asked for 80k and my mother paid 40k today. Apparently the case they have is over a month and a half old.
This is all the information I have, can someone let me know what we should do ahead?

March 30, 2025 at 1:09 pmOP, bribing cops will not guarantee that she will not be implicated. If you want cops to keep her out of the case and talk to her politely, then you have to engage an experienced criminal lawyer. There are a lot of nuances here. Do not throw caution to the wind. Police are known to take bribes and then also implicate the innocent.Immediately hire an experienced criminal lawyer, even if he costs more than 80K, it will save a lot of hassle

March 31, 2025 at 5:11 amWhenever you go to a police station, itโs advisable to have a lawyer with you. In many cases, the police take advantage of a person’s lack of legal knowledge to extort money.I have very limited legal knowledge. I think, in this situation, your mother could have filed a complaint against the tenant, as they were running a brothel in the rented flat. Your mother should not be an accused party in this matter.

March 30, 2025 at 10:31 amI’m not bashing.I’m not saying what private doctors are doing is bad, after all their skill is what makes them money.
Its same as any other profession be it lawyer, psychologist or financial adviser.
You are paying for their time. And that’s fair
But police are paid for their work by government using our taxes. But they keep asking bribes to do anything on your case like they are doctors who need payment for their time

March 30, 2025 at 9:54 amI once helped a road accident victim (I knew him) took him to the hospital in an ambulance, he died en route to the hospital and i was made a witness without my information. Court summoned me as witness 4 times but the cops didn’t care to inform me. The 5 time a NBA(non bailable warrent) was issued against me. Suddenly that cop has my number and he calls me informing about NBA and how I didn’t care to go to court as witness. I freak out and then send someone else to the P.S (I was afraid they might arrest me since it is a NBA). He(cop) demands 5k just to give the case number (which I paid) after which I gave my testimony as a witness. Sorry it’s not related to the post but that’s how system works in our country.-

March 30, 2025 at 1:00 pmNoted just India, the US federal police have instances of selling off impounded cars and personally pocketing money. Killing innocent people and getting away with it. LA police involved in drug business and flesh trade. So policing is a dirty business, not just in India, but all over the world.

March 30, 2025 at 2:17 pmLol, not at the scale that happens in India.
A charge gets added onto when someone tries to bribe a cop here.
I have never had one good experience with Indian cops. I have had bad experiences with cops in the US as well but the law system was involved to determine if I had to pay the fines or not.-

March 30, 2025 at 2:21 pmI wouldn’t trust the police in any country. And after hearing that they can get away with selling impounded cars and no liability for shooting innocent people in well publicized cases, that gives me the chills. In India, the cops atleast get rounded in well publicized cases.Speaking from my personal experience dealing with cops in several third world and first world countries.

March 30, 2025 at 3:22 pmCops favour people in authority all over the world. The law is tilted to favour either the rich and the influential or the poor in case of publicized cases, because the poor can gather in numbers and create a major law and order problem. Not only in India do the police favour people with authority (for obvious reasons), even in the US, the whites get more favorable treatment as compared to other races.

March 30, 2025 at 5:15 pmI was not surprised after I watched a stand-up in which the comedian mentioned that the police is pro-people as it helps you sought and solve long cases quickly without much money and hassle in the backdrop of the long list of pending pity cases hanging in the judiciary for years which might cost more just as travelling expense. To me, Rs40k seem like a steal deal here. The issue is bureaucracy, which acts as gatekeepers of the judiciary, makes tedious laws and makes justice feel like a once-in-a-lifetime dream.

March 30, 2025 at 4:57 pmBecause most people, don’t want the unnecessary hassle, and just want to have peace. I am assuming you are a lawyer and your take will be different but given an option most folks would never want to step inside a courtroom or a police station. I understand this is not okay, and they should fight but a lot many are struggling to just go by and if mental peace means bribing some unscrupulous cops, then so be it.

March 30, 2025 at 4:36 amThis is another new risk for owners renting out their flats/homes. My friend who is a fairly successful businessman has many rental properties for investment and recently let out his high end gated community flat to a supposed IT employee but 3 months later cops arrested that ‘IT guy’ for running a brothel in that flat. My friend had to pull all his contacts in politics and police to get out of that soup. My suggestion is to get in touch with a good lawyer and also leverage your contacts in politics or bureaucracy. -

March 30, 2025 at 6:54 pmI will tell you an old indian courtroom joke to reflect reality of this situation. There was man who was made co-accused in some accident case when he was 60 year old. The case ran for twenty years and finally he was exonerated. Now 80 years old, he blessed the judge and said “I hope you become constable in your next life.” Judge was like – I am a Judge – I am much higher in hierarchy than a constable. The old man said, I didn’t knew that – I thought constable was much more powerful. Back when I was made co-accused, constable told me to pay Rs 50000 and he would remove my name in 20 minutes. However, for a judge to remove this accusation, it took 20 years and I had to spend Rs. 5,00,000 in lawyer fees. So, you know where the confusion arises?
