For last few months I (and I am sure many of you) have observed that our country subreddit has become increasingly hostile to the well being of the country.

Before that it was just opposing government and being extreme left (both of which is perfectly OK in a free country). But increasingly the hate and deliberate filtration of old and negative news in that sub has increased manifold. And if you look at the participation it is very clear that any members having opposing viewpoint are subsequently muted and banned from the site.

It’s highly suspected that many of the admins of that sub are not Indians and may be of Pakistani origins.

All these would have been OK if it was just any sub, but it being the primary sub of our country affects the country’s image and populace directly and hence must be held to higher standards.

As we know, Reddit is still considered by our government as something niche and may not be under much scrutiny like that of other SMs like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter etc and hence it might have flown under the radar so far.

But NOT anymore. It’s high time we bring it in compliance with the IT ACT where the content moderation is considered a direct responsibility of the moderators and of the website itself. Basically the same way that Twitter was made to fall in place.

Few things should be available to the government

        1) Moderators of main country subs should NOT be anonymous to the government. They maybe anonymous to the general public but government must have the contact info and personal details

        2) Reddit should provide a country liaison with the government just like other mainstream social media. This is a hotline to connect to in case normal channels doesn’t work.

So any lawyer specialising in these things, can you suggest how to go about it as an individual and / or a group and bring the government and / or courts attention to this growing menace ?

Which sub are you talking about? And why do you think lawyers can do anything about it?

Are you directly calling for censorship of an anonymous Reddit forum? Dude, even China does not go that far. Are you listening you yourself? Or are you just a bit too high on cow piss?

Accountability of what? Differing view points? Do you have any idea how a democracy and discourse should work?

Fake news and propaganda where no non extreme-left view is tolerated. This has a direct implication on India’s image to the world.

In any case all internet platforms working in India should abide by the modified Indian IT ACT. If you are not playing by the rules then it’s upto you to get your act together.

Bahahhahahha dude I’m telling you, “the world” doesn’t care abour any country’s “image”. If you care about India’s image, make sure no one dies in a religious gathering, no one dies in train stations, no one scams people out of money, don’t throw garbage on the streets and ask people to stop shitting literally and figuratively on the streets.

Censorship of opinions is exactly what creates a banana republic where no one talks about a high court acquitting a man who raped his wife to death but Supreme Court hears a case about a second hand shitty joke said on the internet. That damages image of countries.

And don’t write those all caps IT act and stuff because all of those are applied when it fits the narrative of a certain side. Just because there are rules doesn’t mean they’re justified either.

Lol, Indians are so used to being brought up in authoritarian settings that alternate views are disturbing

                                Practising advocate here:

You can definitely file a case, but you’ll lose, and costs will be imposed upon you. This is not a fight you want to take.

Freedom of speech is a fundamental right. If you don’t like what such subs say, them mute them and move on. No one is forcing you to listen to their views.

I don’t even participate in the subs that I don’t like. I suggest you do the same.
