A man shared how his apartment society fined him for performing a Diwali puja on his balcony.

Here’s the context: He had set up a small puja area on his private balcony and lit diyas (traditional lamps) during Diwali. He also burst a few crackers within the permissible time limits set by local authorities. However, the apartment’s Residents Welfare Association (RWA) slapped him with a fine, citing two reasons:

        1. Violation of noise pollution rules.

        2. Risk of fire hazards from the diyas and crackers.

The man argued that he followed all safety precautions, kept the diyas in a controlled area, and followed the government’s guidelines on crackers. He felt the RWA was unfairly targeting him because other residents celebrating Christmas or New Year’s with decorations and loud music had never faced similar action.

The post sparked intense debate. Some people sided with the man, claiming that the RWA was being overly restrictive and selectively enforcing rules, which amounted to cultural discrimination. Others felt the RWA was justified, arguing that common areas (like balconies) need to be regulated for the safety and comfort of all residents.

The real kicker? The man later updated that he took the RWA to court, citing infringement of his right to religious expression under Article 25 of the Indian Constitution. The case reportedly ended in a settlement, but it raised big questions about the balance between personal freedoms and collective living rules.

What’s your take on this? Should RWAs have the power to regulate private spaces like balconies, or was this an overreach? Have you seen similar controversies in your community?

Keeping a fire hazard on the balcony is dangerous…does he have a fire extinguisher nearby?

Also…firecrackers are explosive and setting them off on a balcony is dangerous and a cause of noise pollution. I understand if you burst crackers in public places outside but to do it indoors will obviously disturb ppl…

Yes very dangerous. That’s why I recommend every Hindus to become Muslims. No mor ganga jal water hazard or diya fire hazard. Lovely. We should also ban cooking – unattended fire 🔥 everyone Uber eats reduced fire hazard

This Diwali i saw my neighbours burn rockets from their own balconies very close to their diwali lights. Had one single spark had hit those lights they would have not only taken down themselves but their parents and younger sibling who lived below and above them

Kuchh nahin hota. Lights mein rocket ki aag chali jaayegi toh kuchh nahin hoga. Agar 5-6 seconds continuous aag lights ke contact mein aaye toh taar melt hole short circuit hogi, jiske liye MCB hoti hai.

The fire hazard issue was a legit concern, since it’s not only his flat that’ll burn.

However the noise pollution is an absolute BS reason. I don’t think he was detonating nuclear bombs on his balcony.

These RWAs need to be checked. Multiple societies in NCR region are channeling maintenance fund into personal use and not even declaring it. As new societies are basically rented out, the tenants don’t really care what is being done with the deposited money. It’s a new form of corruption!

If the RWA is so much concerned about fire safety, please have them produce society’s fire system’s audit for last 5 years.

Diyas, what’s the problem? But firecrackers in a balcony? The man must be crazy! If it was just sparklers, that’s ok, but how can someone play with firecrackers in their balcony? Dangerous not only for him but for everyone else!

Until one has specifics of size height of balcony and what things were burnt outside of sparklers let’s not speculate.

We’ve at times burnt chakris in common area between flats, snakes, sparklers, pencils.

Most flower Pots tend to be outside.

Some kids would do masti in the stairs with “hand Bombs” that pop on impact. That’s boys being boys.
