        Hi all,

        Need some advice urgently. One of my friend lost his salary to fraudulent online transactions that happened and went through without him sharing any OTPs, within a span of 5 mins. He has already registered a cyber complaint telephonically by calling at 1930. The lady on the call mentioned that he should visit the nearest police station and show them this acknowledgement for further action.

        However, upon reaching the nearest police station, the officers are saying that there is no need to do anything from our end or their end, as in, they don’t need to “register” any complaint and that it is registered already. They further mentioned that we should come after a week and check if there’s any progress. Is this the right course of action or are the officers being ignorant about the situation?

          Unable to see the first comment here, although I could see a part of it in the notification bar. Idk what is up with my Reddit, but adding a few more details below.

          1) He withdrew some money from an Axis Bank ATM near his office. Within the next 5 mins, he got messages with OTPs followed by the debit messages. Unfortunately for him, by the time he opened his phone and saw these texts, his account was wiped clean.

          2) He immediately spoke with his bank (Canara bank), who outright refused to give out the current statement (saying he has to wait 24 hours for the transactions to appear on the statement), and he didn’t have access to net banking or something to look into this himself.

          3) Because there was no transaction IDs with him, he couldn’t file a cyber complaint. And it wasn’t until today that he managed to get all the details by visiting the bank’s branch, and filed a cyber complaint.

          4) The transactions are all POS transactions with GoogleServ, Airtel, and other websites being used to make these transactions.

            Please go to the police station jurisdiction to which the ATM belongs to or his place of residence and file FIR. It’s his fundamental right and police has to take his details. Forward the FIR details to the bank.

            Police officer think of it as a mediocre task, so just push them to file FIR.

                Unfortunately, it is not all that simple in India. My friend used an ATM located in Nerul, Mumbai and he lives in Dombivli, Mumbai. Now, the Dombivli police want us to file the FIR in Nerul and vice versa. And regardless of how much we push, the common man can’t unfortunately do a lot in such situations except plead :’)

                    I was told the same and my transaction was international. But still I forced the station in my jurisdiction to take up my FIR. It’s a simple form they have to fill with your details. You need to be stern. I even got the money back in 40 days.

                    My total amount was 18k but still I took it up with the police and asked them to take my FIR. I got many judgemental looks from the people in police station because the amount was relatively low.

                        More power to you. Somehow, given our language barrier (they realised we aren’t locals, as both of us hail from Kerala), they kept pushing away the matter. We’ve been asked to visit in a week, maybe then we’ll try to push further if there’s no progress. Nevertheless, happy to know that you did get back your money. My friend isn’t all that well to do, and this amount is very significant. Hoping for the best.

                            Yes, main point is the police will try to not really take up this matter because sadly they won’t get any cut. If a fraudulent transaction is made and no service is provided, bank can easily raise a chargeback and the merchant needs to prove that a service was provided. And the customer wins the case by default

                                Somehow, even Canara Bank isn’t helping us at all. We have written mails, visited the local branch, and done everything we could, but they’re not letting us make a chargeback. We had to fight a lot to get the transaction details, that too, only after we gave a written complaint. Conveniently, they charged my friend 170 rupees to block his debit card. And, to top that off, they refused to give us the transaction details on the day this all happened, stating bank servers are down. It all sounds too fishy. Ours is one messed up service industry, that I can tell.

                                    Can’t he get the details from passbook or transaction history online? Whatever happens, it will be recorded in the transaction. Blocking the card must be free, why are they taking money. All these services are free of cost on net or mobile banking

                                        He’s not very tech-savvy or anything at all. Guy never used net banking, and only used upi for most part. Therefore, he wasn’t able to use net banking for this purpose. And once his account was blocked, the bank said he can’t create one until it’s unblocked. Also, yeah, first time I’m seeing a bank deny these basic services. I’m never letting anyone bank with Canara bank going forward. We have mailed to the RBI ombudsman, mentioning everything that Canara bank did. Hoping to get a resolution out of this.

                                What details do you have that your compliment is registered?

                                Try going to the cyber crime division of the police.

                                    We did go to the cyber crime division of our nearest police station but then they said that the cyber complaint is enough. Hence, I wanted to confirm. We did receive an acknowledgement over message, so not quite sure if that is sufficient.

                                    **Dealing with Cybercases.**

                                    Hey there, have you sent any letter/ email to your bank seeking to block these transactions as fraudulent one?

                                    If not do it.

                                    So also, As you have given a complaint through 1930 phonecall, you might have received a Acknowledgment no for filing the cybercrime case in NCRP portal.
                                    Kindly check it.

                                    By which you can able to check the current status of the complaint in [cybercrime.gov.in](http://cybercrime.gov.in) portal.

                                    If no acknowledgment number is generated so far, raise a complaint in [cybercrime.gov.in](http://cybercrime.gov.in) by giving all the particulars, and then approach the nearby cyber station to register a CSR/FIR to take the things to next step.

                                        Hey, yes we have sent an email to the bank asking them to block the transactions and also looped in RBI ombudsman as the bank seems to be avoiding the issue altogether when we tried reaching out to the customer care. And we have also received the acknowledgement number from the cyber portal. Hoping this is sufficient to get the money back. Thanks for the response! Much appreciated.
