        My Vi prepaid SIM got disconnected due to non-recharge. I visited the Vi store **within the grace period** to request reactivation so they could block the number for me.

        Today, they called me and informed me that my number is available but has been **converted to postpaid without my consent**, and I must pay for a postpaid plan to reactivate it.

        After raising this issue via email, they now say I must **wait 7 days** while they “try” to convert it back to prepaid. I believe this is a tactic to **force users into postpaid plans**.

        * **Is this legal?**
        * **Can TRAI/DoT take action against Vi for forced postpaid conversion?**
        * **Should I wait or file a complaint immediately?**

        Would appreciate any legal guidance on this.

          Why didn’t you recharge it yourself if it was in the grace period?

              By grace period, I was referring to the following point from the TRAI document
              “A consumer whose connection is deactivated shall be given a grace period of 15 days within which he can reactivate the same number;”

My SIM was already deactivated, and I was not able to recharge it myself. When I contacted Vi customer care, they informed me that I had to visit the Mi Store for reactivation.

              However, I might have misunderstood this point. If my interpretation is incorrect, please feel free to correct me.

                  On what date did your last plan expire?

                      The plan expired on October 8, 2024. I visited the Vi store on January 15 to request them to block the number. Today (February 8), they called and informed me that the number is available for reactivation, but it can only be done by paying postpaid charges.

                      **Charges:**

                      * ₹551 per month + 18% GST = ₹650 (I need to pay this for 4 months before converting my SIM back to prepaid).
                      * **Security deposit:** ₹298
                      * **Prepaid conversion charge (after 4 months):** ₹331

                          They played you. You could have gotten same prepaid number but they made you wait out the 90+15 days period. First you should get your number however you can get. Get receipts for every amount you pay. Once your services are active file a complaint against VI, the store and email all details to VI nodal officer. There are high chances you’ll get some of your money back. Then port out after 90 days are over.

                              Suggestion noted. Let them do as they please since they believe they have the upper hand. I have everything documented and I may escalate this, not just for myself, but for others who are being scammed by these companies.
