CI am from pune and its people have no traffic sense whatsoever. In last month I have seen numerous people crossing the road while the light is Green for vehichles. And sometimes because of the trucks we can’t even see them until its too late. Thankfully I haven’t been in any accident and my speed is manageable but, what could happen in this case if it happens to me, would I be liable?

LBased on global traffic norms- pedestrians always have the first right of passage. pedestrians > cycles > cars.

Since you are starting from a stop position and the light has just turned green, if you are accelerating aggressively and if you are driving a full size SUV like a Thar or Fortuner then chances are that when you hit the pedestrian they might get dragged under and you might driver over them or worst they get stuck with the car and get pulled along until they get unstuck.
if they are stuck and you continue driving then the longer you drive the lesser their chances to survive.
if they unstuck then they would most likely survive with some cuts,bruises & fractures
Also, you will have a hit and run case against you. if in case death happens then culpable homicide not amounting to murder

UIndian Motor Vehicle Act puts significant responsibility on drivers. If there’s an accident, several factors will be considered….your speed, reaction time, whether you honked, and if you could have reasonably avoided the collision.
Best protection — install a dashcam, maintain safe speed, and document any incident immediately. Contact police and get accident report filed even for minor incidents. Remember, pedestrians often get benefit of doubt in Indian courts, regardless of signal status.
Keep all your documents (license, insurance, PUC) updated – this helps tremendously if something happens.
