Why are so many of our punishments in the form of fines? Why don’t we have the option of community service?

Other countries have options for violators to pay off their debt to society through community service. Why don’t we have an option for that?

Why so much emphasis on fines? This is the reason why lower economic sections are not booked for anything under the law. Community service could make a big difference to the country through garbage cleanup and other activities.

Punishable by fine means legal for a price.

State wants money to fund it’s luxury and votes. By design it doesn’t genuinely care about welfare of it’s people. if you notice all the machinery around you works astonishingly well if state has something to take from you but it’s dysfunctional or just enough functional to give you an illusion of it’s functioning nature.

The system does not care. They probably would have had fines for murder too, if they could. Money buys the system.
Ironically, the Pune Porsche murder case was bought by the family.

The simple answer is we value money more than time here.

But that would be revolutionary! Apps should track community service hours, reward or penalize users, and link credentials to government services or LinkedIn badges.

Community Service has now been mandated in new Penal Code (Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita)

Community service has been included for petty and small first time offences under the new criminal laws. Not sure how well it’s going to be implemented though. But could have been brought about before, yes
