I do not support dowry pratha or any such bullshit.
However, why does a separate law exists that only penalises men for recieving gifts from the brides family even when they are given willingly? Also, why does this not apply to the inverse case like in Muslims when the man pays the mahr to the brides family?

Gifting and receiving a gift is a legal and perfectly fine practice. Abusing someone for money, whether it is your wife or any random man or woman comes under Extortion. Beating up your spouse comes under domestic violence, so why is there a separate law that only applies when the perpetrator is a husband and the victim is a wife, inspite of other laws being present for protection.

The further question here is why is it illegal for a man to ask for anything when he can be denied by the woman and further penalised for extortion and domestic violence if he abuses the wife in any way post marriage? Why the need for two separate set of laws for the same crime?

Many laws in India exist because super law covering that case is not enforced. Like you don’t need domestic violence law if general injury and violence is enforced. You don’t need SC/ST law if discrimination law is enforced.

Because parliamentarians can pat themselves in the back for being “pro-women”. Rather than spending on development etc, you have 20 different “LADLI YOJANAS” all over India. Every party is busy showing women are weaker sex, who are also victims and need to be “saved”.

Hence most laws are gynocentric. Dowry, 498A, DV, 125 etc – all are gynocentric. Even if some laws don’t have inherent biases, the implementation in reality is only when women complain.

Dowry became a social evil, leading to domestic violence, murders, suicides, families going broke and killing themselves. Instead of parents willingly doing what they can for their daughters, or gifting her, it became a social expectation.

It caused so many problems and was the root cause of a huge number of crimes.

Otherwise, people still gift what they want. Its not called dowry though.
