UHi I’m a 21F final year student of btech, and since we had to do an internship in our final year, I was suggested by my sister to apply in this XYZ company, that her colleague, let’s say rahul recommended, saying this company was of his bestfriend’s, it was a start-up.
I applied, got selected ( there was barely any question they asked, just here and there ), and they asked me how many months of internship that you need for college, I said I needed min 4 for college, so they said that can you extend it to 6 months. Since I was naive and very excited to work with such good people, I said yes.
The starting one month was beautiful, it was good, I was enjoying and all, and was happy to work….. But then, gradually I came to know that my TL is a maniac, he threatens, disrespects and shouts on interns for not being able to do the work that should have been done by professional employees. He hired us, on his on will, we said that we didn’t know react at all, but still he treated me as well as other interns also, very badly. ( I’ve posted multiple times, with images proof that how rude, and bad he was with me on this Reddit page )
So now the thing is I’ve been working in a banglore based firm as an intern from last 4 months, that is from dec 15 to April 17. I drafted a mail a week before ( on Friday ) that I was planning my last working day around 17 April and that let me know if there are any formalities for me to complete.
Guess what, no reply. Then later on Monday after our sync up call at 5 pm, I was asked to remain in the meeting while other three interns were said to go, and then my TL asked me, that he heard that I was quitting. Some HR of this company, who also happens to be the director ( on LinkedIn ) saw my mail and posted about it on their broadcasting channel idk what that means. So I told him that yes I was leaving and there were reasons, I told him that also.
Then on 17 April, I updated him about the work and the final folder structure and everything, saying that it was my last day. And he replies me saying, ” who confirms that this is your last day “. That was literally so rude to hear. And then he called me immediately on teams, and I can’t express how much mental torture he did to me that day. He straight away said, “You can’t leave on your own choice, it doesn’t happen that way, you can be jailed, I’ll get you block from all the companies”. And then he said that as an IT guy I’ve to do something with your laptop, share your screen, I did. And my mails were open, because I was trying to copy the code that we get for logging into teams after every one day ( idk what’s this thing ). And he said, ” oh no no madam, please don’t show me mails, you’re trying to bribe me “.
Immediately after this, the HR called me, he said that you need to bring an application stating that why are you leaving and it should be signed by the HOD. I had reasons to leave, first and the most prominent one, they were torturing me. My TL was very bad. Second, my father needs to undergo cataract surgery in both his eyes and my mother is busy in census training and then duty later on. I’m the only child they have, so I have to take care of them. Moreover, I was not getting to learn anything here, since he was rude, and wanted work immediately, we had no choice but to use gpt. He never gave us time, never. And lemme tell you, he was working in some other company also, and was a shareholder in this too.

Now I got my HOD’s sign, and now he says that Oh I want this on a official letter pad of your college, he wants an noc of this. Because in my noc I wrote it as working from, 15dec to 15 june.
Please tell me, how can I get out of it. And I’ve my evaluation of this on 14/15 may.
Are they even allowed to question me or stop me from leaving on this basis.
TL;DR: 21F final-year BTech student joined a startup internship (Dec–April) that turned toxic—TL was abusive, disrespectful, and made interns do work beyond their skills. When I tried to leave after completing 4 months (my college requirement), they ignored my resignation, then threatened me with legal action, blacklisting, and forced me to get an HOD-signed letter. Even after that, they’re demanding more documents (official letterhead/NOC) and trying to stop me from leaving. I also have genuine family reasons (father’s surgery). Are they legally allowed to do this, and how do I get out safely?
