April 30, 2026 at 6:50 amHi everyone, Iโm a 21F college student in India dealing with a difficult and increasingly unsafe situation at home, and Iโm looking for legal advice. My father has been emotionally and physically abusive for years and is extremely controlling.
Recently, I got a job in another city, and this feels like my chance to finally move out and become independent. I believe I can leave directly from my college and relocate without informing him beforehand. I have some savings from my previous internships to support my move.
However, Iโm genuinely worried about what might happen after that.
Given his past behavior, Iโm afraid that once he realizes Iโve left, he may try to track me down, show up at my PG accommodation or workplace, create a scene, harass me, or try to force me to return. This is something Iโm very anxious about because he has been physically aggressive in the past.
I want to understand my legal rights and options:
As a 21-year-old adult, can I legally move out and live independently without parental consent?
If my father tries to stop me, restrain me, or harm me, what legal protections do I have?
Can I take any preventive legal steps before moving out (such as informing the police or filing a complaint)?
What should I do if he shows up at my PG or workplace and creates a disturbance?
Are there any womenโs helplines, legal aid services, or protection mechanisms I should reach out to?
I donโt want to escalate things unnecessarily, but I need to ensure my safety and independence. This opportunity means a lot to me, and Iโm trying to handle this carefully.
Any advice would really help.
Thank you. ๐
