April 1, 2025 at 4:56 amHi everyone,
Looking for some urgent help or advice. Our house in Mumbai was demolished by BMC in February 2025.
We were forced to vacate immediately, and the electricity meter was also removed around the same time.
We haven’t stayed there or used a single unit of electricity since the demolition.
Now suddenly, at the end of March, we’ve received an Adani bill of ₹3500. I have no idea how or why this was generated when:
• The house no longer exists
• The meter was already taken out
• No electricity was consumedMy father wants to just pay the bill to avoid any “issues,” but I strongly feel this is unfair and unnecessary.
Has anyone faced something similar?
Which department or channel at Adani should I contact?
What to do?
Any help or guidance would be hugely appreciated.

April 1, 2025 at 5:12 amDo you have paperwork of connection being disconnected with dates mentioned and the meter being disconnected by the electric company’s personnel? If you have proper evidence that the bill was generated after disconnection then you can easily contest the bill.

April 1, 2025 at 5:10 amDid you disconnect the connection? I don’t think merely physical removal of meter means end of connection. Some part of bill if fixed charges irrespective of consumption.-

OP
April 1, 2025 at 5:12 amIt’s never 3500, that’s not even the minimum. What do you mean by disconnecting the connection? And would we be liable?Aren’t there security deposits as well?

April 1, 2025 at 5:32 amWhat’s the breakup of the amount? It must show units, fixed charges, etc.Units must be 0.

April 1, 2025 at 5:34 amMy guess would be – when the person came to take the reading of the meter, it didn’t exist, so he must have mentioned unable to take reading or something. In such cases your bill is automatically generated based on your usage of previous months and same months of previous years. Since you didn’t put in a disconnection request, Adani thinks that they could not take the meter reading due to some reason.-

April 1, 2025 at 5:36 amThis was followed for some months in covid. Citizens were asked to take the reading themselves, but obviously not everyone did it. Adani generated a bill based on usage patterns for many. Later when official meter reading was taken, the amount was adjusted.-

April 1, 2025 at 5:37 amSo how to go about this? What do we do? Can we avoid this amount?-

April 1, 2025 at 6:36 amYour best bet would be to contact Adani customer care and explain the situation. Do this in person at an Adani centre.

April 1, 2025 at 6:26 amIf bmc destroyed your house without a two month notice, you didn’t have to do the discontinuation. keep the bill, and proof of your house being demolished and DO NOT PAY ANY BILL.you can do two things:
1. go to consumer court and ask them to settle it
2. sit tight as the bills mount and when they sue you, you counter sue both adani and bmc with fraud and tort -

April 1, 2025 at 8:08 amA lawyer hereYou need to inform the company about demolition and ask them to disconnect the supply.
Go and visit the Adani electricity office and clear the confusion. Sitting tight on bills won’t help you in future.

April 1, 2025 at 8:39 amI don’t know why he is being adamant. He feels it will affect our current property dispute and situation. We’re currently in a complicated situation regarding the building. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we were compelled to vacate the premises as the demolition took place right in front of us. This was linked to a redevelopment issue, which we had not agreed to—though that is a separate matter altogether.
At this point, we would like to clarify that we haven’t used the electricity since vacating the premises and therefore, we do not wish to pay the amount being charged. He would also prefer not to bring up the demolition explicitly at this stage, as he believes it could impact the ongoing dispute. Please help

April 1, 2025 at 3:57 pmAn electric meter doesn’t have any bearing ina property ownership matter. Previously electric bill was taken as address proof hence many elder believe it will impact the ownership but in court/other legal issues bill not considered as a proof of ownership.-

April 1, 2025 at 8:11 amrequest for a disconnection of service. You can also update that as the house was demolished – you will not be paying for electricity not used. You may still have to pay meter / connection charges.-
