Bank loan repayment notice

My grandfather had bank loan in state bank of 5lakh, we are not sure why that amount was taken. He passed away 2 years back. Now my mother is receiving bank notice..Are we liable to pay the loan amount ? He has not left anything for us. We have brother in law who is utilising my grandfather agricultural land and taking yield in it. Need advice what all things can be done here.

As your grandfathers legal heir, the bank does have a right of recovery from your mother.
