March 13, 2025 at 8:19 pmSo my mother passed away without a nominee and I had to reclaim the contents of the locker and to reclaim the jwellery , the bank called in a valuer who basically saw the contents of the locker and noted down the amount of the gold jewellery and the bank charges me 2k for it. Was that justified?Did I get scammed? Even I don’t earn 2k per day. I feel exploited tbh.Is valuation even mandatory for claiming locker contents without nomination ( I have submitted all the required documents like legal heirs certificate,, indemnity bond, surities etc)
The bank also didn’t give me any bill for that and demanded cash.
2K hurt like hell as that’s worth my 1 to 1.5 week’s ration

March 13, 2025 at 8:43 pmI am sorry that your mother passed away. You could send an email to the bank’s ombudsman explaining your situation. Perhaps they can give you a better answer.

March 13, 2025 at 9:17 pmYou need legal heir certificate. Even after valuation, bank won’t let you take locker stuff with you.If locker stuff is more than 5L, you need to provide security equal to double amount of stuff available in locker.
At any point, if they ask money, you should ask for RBI circular and ask them to send request through email.
You can complain to RBI ombudsman after 30 days

March 13, 2025 at 9:31 pmMay I know what is meant by security? Why can’t I simply claim the jwellery after all my submitted documents have been approved?-

March 13, 2025 at 9:42 pmBank /RBI rules
security was typo. I mean surety.
You need to bring a person to sign in bank whose networth is more than your locker stuff

March 14, 2025 at 5:13 amHow will the bank determine whether the surety is needed or not when the bank doesn’t have know the value of jwellery or we the claimants don’t know what is even inside the locker? Will the valuer still be called?-

March 14, 2025 at 8:08 amIt’s surety to cover bank’s ass if at all someone else shows up to claim the contents or bank accounts. Normal banking process.Put yourself in the bank’s shoe and think would you want an independent valuation done before handing over contents to someone else? Otherwise what’s protecting them from you filing claims that they stole your stuff. 2000 is fair i think for a valuation professional to opine on the value of jewelry.

March 13, 2025 at 9:25 pmYes sir you will be charged for evaluation-

OP
March 13, 2025 at 9:28 pmCharging for evaluation is not the issue, the issue is how is evaluation for jewelry mandatory if I am not taking any gold loan.
And after charging in cash, no receipt was generated.-

March 13, 2025 at 9:36 pmThey have recorded the entire event of me taking the jwellery from locker(which I know is a standard procedure), how is the worth of jwellery even related to that, may I know?-

March 13, 2025 at 9:39 pmIt’s literally there in the second paragraph of my answer above buddy. What prevents you from taking a chain from the locker and claiming the chain was supposed to be 200gm but now is 10gm.
-
UUser_e4c6e930
OP
March 13, 2025 at 9:45 pmUsing that logic, I can still complain that the chain that was 200 gm (at the time of evaluation)was actually 300gm when I put it into the locker. Also, do banks have a fixed rate for evaluation or does it differ?

March 13, 2025 at 10:25 pmyou are only focused on knowing if this amount is standard or not. the charges dont matter what matters is does the bank have the right to ask you to pay for it, if yes you should have asked for the bill.Escalate it on email (you can find the different level of escalation emails online) to find out exact details from the bank.
