May 4, 2025 at 6:10 amHi everyone, I’m seeking legal advice regarding a broadband issue I faced in 2024.I was living in Gurugram and had installed a Wi-Fi connection from a company called (Say X ) Broadband. I used the service for about 1–2 months. Before moving out, I informed their team to disconnect the service and collect their router. However, they delayed the pickup and never took any action, despite multiple reminders from my side.
Eventually, I had to move out of that place. Months later, they started calling me, saying I still have the router and that I must return it or pay Rs. 3000, which they claim is the cost of the device.
I told them I’m no longer living there and had already asked them to collect it back when I was still at the location. I even asked them to go and check the old address. They refused and are now calling me repeatedly, threatening to file a police complaint if I don’t return the router or pay the amount.
Also, I had paid a security deposit of Rs. 750, which they are still holding and are not even acknowledging.
I want to know:
1. Can they actually file a valid police complaint in this situation?
2. Am I legally liable for the router when they failed to collect it on time?
3. How should I respond to this?Would really appreciate help from anyone who has dealt with a similar issue or knows the legal side of this in India. Thanks in advance!

May 4, 2025 at 6:30 amNALFaced this a while ago. The company was Airtel. Had taken fiber connection and after using it for 1 year, requested for disconnection and pickup was scheduled 2 days before I was leaving the house.
On the day of pickup, the pickup guy called and told me he cant come because of some issue. I said ok, I will talk to the pickup coordinator. I informer the coordinator of this and all was good.
Then they failed to pick up the router the next day as well. I called them at 6PM and told them they have exactly 3 hours to pickup the router as after 9PM, I wont open gate to strangers and next morning I was leaving.
Got a call from them after a week. They asked me to return the router.
I told them that I already vacated the premises and that they can visit the house and beg the owner to let them pick up the router.
A few days later they again called and this time I was fed up and told them “I have recording of all call logs, if I hear from you once again, I will make sure I get the better end of the stick and get hefty compensation for the harassments I am facing.” I asked the call agent’s name and told them to write the exact words I said into their response as well.
They never called again.
Now the answers to your question,
1. Yes, but it wont have any effect. You will always have the better end of the deal. The court will take your side at the end and even the police know that.
2. No, you had, well in advance, told them to collect it. You are not liable as they failed to do their own duty and instead harassed you unnecessarily.
3. Respond by stating “Already had informed well in advance to collect the router and the pickup team failed to do so. If you proceed with police complaint or legal route, I will make sure to involve my lawyer and make this a bigger lawsuit and address it as mental harassment. Also, I am reporting the same to TRAI and Consumer forum.”
The thing is. no company will go to court just for a measly 1000Rs router. Moreover in this case, it it completely their fault for not picking up the router in due time. So just chill and threaten them the same way I did.
The next time they call, ask for the agent’s name as well and file a consumer complaint against the company on INGRAM (if you have time). They will stop calling.

May 4, 2025 at 6:45 amReally appreciate you taking the time to share this honestly, it gave me a lot of clarity and made me feel less alone in this. In my case, they’ve been calling me on and off for over a year now, constantly threatening police action , even though I had clearly told them to collect it before I moved out. They just didn’t bother. It’s been mentally exhausting, and I was honestly beginning to doubt myself.
I’m definitely going to use your script the next time they call, and I’m also looking into filing a complaint if this continues.

May 4, 2025 at 7:30 amJust ignore them. I had same issue with Hathway in chennai. They came for pickup after a month of me vacating and moving to another city. If wanting to install they will come on same day and do everything thats required. but if we want to disconnect all this nonsense.
So mine happened in 2021. I get calls from some numbers which i have all blocked. They send emails threatening legal action if i dont pay 2500 rupees. I once responded saying i am going to take legal action for harrassing me and delay in services. but i dont think anyone reads those emails. So now i get similar emails once in 6 months. and call from new number once in 3 months which i block again.
its been 4 years. same shit going on.
My wife 3 years before for an airtel connection, she panicked and paid. I think thats all they are expecting from this. Imagine sending a lawyer to chennai court to file a case against me for 2500 rupees. thats gonna cost them more than that.

May 4, 2025 at 5:45 pmHearing that this has been going on for 4 years in your case, with no real consequences, actually helps me calm down.
I’ve been getting nonstop calls for over a year now, and I was starting to feel like I was stuck or did something wrong. But clearly, this is a pattern — they’re just trying to pressure people into paying out of fear.

May 5, 2025 at 2:13 amIt’s Airtel, no need to conceal the name. They’re already well-known for such tactics. Always communicate with them firmly.Nearly every former Airtel broadband customer shares a similar experience. I’ve dealt with them on two separate occasions myself.
