April 2, 2025 at 6:27 amRecently a company from US sent me like a jacket , and bunch of other stuff as merch for some help in their project. Declared Value was close to 99$.But got a custom duty charge of โน5900 through DHL
Honestly I’m not sure if i even wanna pay this because value of those items in india is probably less than the duty amount
Can i refuse to pay duty and not accept the package
Or will there be any consequences -

April 2, 2025 at 6:32 amYou can refuse to pay duty. You can also ask them to re-assess the value if you believe that it was truly worth $99.-

April 2, 2025 at 11:14 amYou will have to provide them the proof of your transaction. And if you do not agree with the enhancement of the value of the goods, they will have to pass an assessment/speaking order under section 17(5) of the Customs Act, 1962 within 15 days of such re-assessment. -

April 2, 2025 at 6:44 amYou can reject the shipment and if DHL has already informed you or they paid it on behalf then you need to pay it to them-

April 2, 2025 at 6:52 amI believe they did probably pay it already, as it was super fast 5 days global delivery method. The moment package left US DHL asked to provide kyc, letter of authorisation etc so that everything get cleared as soon as possible.

April 2, 2025 at 1:09 pmJust like seized drugs get destroyed!!!India is the only country where we don’t bother nailing gifts to friends and family. Everywhere else there is some sanity and minimum exemption where customs lets gifts through. Nope not in this vishwaguru.

April 2, 2025 at 1:25 pmTell me about it. I deal with car part imports.Every vendor in EU and USA is shocked at the amount of duty we pay here.
And that duty is non refundable. If someone sends a wrong item and I have to return it back, good luck getting the duty back on it.

April 3, 2025 at 12:11 pmJust refuse delivery. Indian import customs are absolutely absurd.Few years ago I sent a gift for a friend from Italy and they wanted a duty 1.5x the value of the gift.
