We own two houses that are directly opposite each other at the very end of a compound. Between them, there’s a public path that technically belongs to the local panchayat or municipality, but there are no houses or properties beyond this path—we’re the last ones in the layout. The path serves only us, as there’s nothing beyond it.

We are considering putting a gate across this path for security reasons, since no one else uses it. We’re aware that it’s a public path, but we’ve heard that there’s a Government Order (GO) or provision which allows residents in dead-end areas to gate such paths, provided the gate is not permanent and can be opened when needed.

We don’t intend to build any structure—just a simple grill gate for our private use.

        Questions:

        1. Is there an actual GO or legal provision that supports this?

        2. Do we need to get official permission, or is an intimation letter to the local panchayat enough?

        3. Could this be considered encroachment even if no one else uses the path?

How can you gate a public path?

Lets say instead of 2 there are 10 houses and everyone agrees and puts a gate there…

No, there is no such GO. Don’t illegally block or occupy public roads giving reasons.
