March 20, 2025 at 8:27 pmI lived for 3 month in colive bengaluru from dec to march and now they are sending me legal notice for not serving notice period, all the bills till march was paid also 22k in deposit amount (that i have not claimed) but they are saying you have to pay 50k for sending legal notice over email,>The cost of issuing this legal notice is ₹50,000 which you are liable to pay us.
Can anybody help me what to do next?

March 20, 2025 at 8:57 pmNAL (Not a lawyer)Just ignore the email and let them keep sending it. You can also block them. I did the same for a notice period amount of 78k in a different situation (didn’t serve the remaining month’s notice period to the employer before leaving/absconding). So kinda similar circumstance as yours but a different situation. Nothing will happen just like nothing happened to me.
This amount is never worth a big company like colive’s time to file a case that will go on for months or even years and require a lot of their money knowing the Indian judiciary (that also you will probably win as such contracts are usually not enforceable). They already took the security deposit for the notice period when you joined. They can’t ask for more money for not serving the notice period.
In fact, no police station will even register their complaint, that also after saying an amount like 50k.
Always be on the accused side of the case, never be on the victim side. As long as you follow that, you will be safe.

March 21, 2025 at 1:03 amLawyer here. This is a standard line lawyers write in their Notice. You don’t have to pay the cost of issuing Notice. Don’t worry.

March 21, 2025 at 7:13 amNo. You should get a reply drafted from a Lawyer. But you don’t have to worry about the cost of Legal Notice. Lawyers generally write such an amount to intimidate the person.-

March 21, 2025 at 8:40 amYou were able to obtain your security deposit? Else on cheque bounce you could have buried them with NI ACT. -

March 21, 2025 at 3:29 amI’ve lived in Zolo, and in my rental agreement its mentioned that either I give one month’s notice or my deposit won’t be refunded. Similar things will be mentioned in your agreement as well. Ignore it; you didn’t give the notice, and they didn’t give the deposit. -

March 21, 2025 at 7:51 amI think that is their strategy. A lawyer will cost time and money. A public prosecutor will cost just time, but still, there is the cost of travel to court as well. Maybe they are asking an amount that is slightly less than the time and money cost of challenging it in court.

March 21, 2025 at 6:45 amAlthough there are provisions for extracting legal expenses from the offender, to stop the misuse.
They are exercised judiciously. Otherwise, for the prettiest matter, a supposed “victim” could hire the costliest advocate and put that cost on the “accused,” turning it into a harassment/extortion racket. They can cite any charge, but it does not mean they can actually stand to take that from you.

March 21, 2025 at 3:21 pmThis seems like a classic intimidation tactic. Legal notice charges are typically borne by the sender, not the recipient. First, check your rental agreement—if there’s no mention of a ₹50k charge for notice issuance, they have no legal basis to demand it. Second, do not pay unless they obtain a court order, which is highly unlikely. Third, you can send them a **reply to the legal notice** denying their claims (via a lawyer) to protect yourself legally. If they keep harassing you, consider filing a complaint with the **consumer forum** for unfair practices. Stay firm, and don’t fall for pressure tactics! -
