I live in a joint family, and my aunt (my dad’s eldest brother’s wife) has been a source of tension for years due to her controlling and abusive behavior. Her own children have moved to other cities to avoid her, but since we live in the same house, her behavior has become increasingly unbearable. Recently, she has become more verbally and physically aggressive, even throwing water at me during an argument, which led to a major verbal fight.

What’s more troubling is that she switches to acting normal the moment her children call her and tell her to behave. My sister and I have come home for the holidays, but she has started targeting and threatening us as well, making us feel very uncomfortable. I’m especially worried about my parents, as they have to deal with her full-time after we leave. Her violent and erratic behavior is affecting everyone’s mental peace.

What can I do to handle this situation and protect my family’s well-being, especially after I leave?

Relocate the parents to another house, even if it’s a smaller place. But, chances are they are used to your aunt and may prefer the joint family arrangement.

It’s true they are used to her drama. However it’s not possible to move right now otherwise we would have done it. But thank you. 😊
