May 5, 2025 at 6:46 amI’m still shocked. I went to my local hospital today to get my 4th dose of the rabies vaccine. I’ve been following the schedule properly after a dog scratch, but I lost the original prescription—a mistake anyone can make. The nurses told me to meet the doctor to get it reissued, so I waited for hours. When I finally got to him, instead of helping, he just looked at me and said,
“Why did you lose the prescription?”
Then, without even trying to understand my situation, he told me,
“If you get rabies or not, I don’t care. I won’t give you the 4th shot.”I didn’t know how to respond. It felt like he saw me as some burden, not a human being. This is a life-or-death issue. Rabies is fatal if left untreated. And I’m not asking for anything special—I’m just trying to stay alive
[ Ghokshadanga hospital mathabhanga ii block district-Coochbehar West Bengal]Edit: I took the 4th shot from a private clinic

May 5, 2025 at 7:19 amFor minor scratches 3 shot is enough, you only need 5 shots when dog bites you, you can also get remaining two shots from some other place.-

May 5, 2025 at 8:47 am1. “For minor scratches 3 shots are enough” — PARTLY TRUECategory I exposure (touching or feeding animals, no skin breach): No vaccine needed.
Category II (minor scratches without bleeding): Usually 3 doses of rabies vaccine may be sufficient, if the dog is healthy and vaccinated and remains so for 10 days.
But if the dog’s status is unknown or it’s a stray, doctors may still recommend 5 doses as a precaution.
—
2. “You only need 5 shots when dog bites you” — MOSTLY TRUE
Category III exposure (bites that break the skin, bleeding, or exposure to saliva on mucous membranes): Requires full post-exposure prophylaxis:
5 rabies vaccine shots (Day 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28)
Plus rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) for high-risk cases (first dose only)
—
3. “You can also get the remaining two shots from some other place” — TRUE
You can complete your vaccine schedule at a different hospital or clinic, as long as:
They use the same vaccine brand or a compatible one
You keep your vaccination records (dates, batch number, etc.)
—
Summary:
Minor scratches may need 3 doses, but it’s best to consult a doctor to evaluate the exposure category.
Dog bites (with bleeding) require 5 doses, possibly with immunoglobulin.
Changing vaccination location is allowed, but continuity is important.

May 5, 2025 at 2:17 pmI’m really sorry you had to go through such a difficult experience. It’s shocking and heartbreaking when you’re just trying to do the right thing for your health, and instead, you’re met with indifference. Everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and empathy, especially when dealing with something as serious as rabies. I hope you get the help you need and never have to face such treatment again.-
