March 12, 2025 at 2:07 pmit was marketed as zero balance account, after an year or so they introduced charges for maintenance+ card maintenance charges and i wasn’t aware of the details. i even mailed them but nothing from their side. now federal bank is asking 1020rs for closing the account as my balance was below 5000*what can i do? I’m repeatedly replying to their customer care mail that I can’t pay this huge amount just to close the account still they are saying we can’t do anything you have to pay to close. what can i do?

March 12, 2025 at 2:21 pmLeave the account unused for more than 10Y.
Bank will close it automatically due to inactive reason and negative balance.Banks are making a proposal to regulator for reporting such instances to credit bureau, but this hasnt been accepted.
So you can just forget that you had one account with this bank and chill.
Banks will close it eventually. -

March 12, 2025 at 2:35 pmLeave it and they will automatically close it after a few years. I have done the same with my hdfc account. -

March 12, 2025 at 2:45 pmI got my axis account closed by reporting to ombudsman. Had visited the branch. The executive told me that the account cannot be closed without paying the amount of βΉ2600. I did not pay the same and instead I complained to RBI ombudsman through their website. After the complaint reached the branch, the bank manager called me and apologise and told me to not complain to ombudsman from next time and close my account without any service charges.-

March 12, 2025 at 6:05 pmYes he’s Correct OP you should do that!
That’s very easy and the longer it drags it would be easier after filing in ombudsman

March 12, 2025 at 3:47 pmExactly the same here! And apart from a few calls from their customer care explaining the βbenefitsβ of keeping the account open, closure was a smooth process. Guess it was OPβs plain ignorance that might cost him money.

March 12, 2025 at 3:53 pmNo private digital account is free also it has clearly mentioned in their fees structure to charge upto 1000 annually for non maintenance of MAB. That’s why I chose PSU bank for a savings account recently open my 2nd account in BOB digitally and got my rupay platinum debit card free for lime only condition is to maintain 3k quarterly MAB which is not a big deal for saving 300+18% GST on debit card annually other one is SBI where I had choosen Virtual Visa debit card which free of charge for life whereas 0 rs account maintenance and no sms charges and best part is their digital banking is really good that I haven’t visited sbi home branch since last 3 years everything done online or through kiosk.-

March 12, 2025 at 4:10 pmYou can forget the account and it will eventually be closed.Or
If you want to still use the account after it’s made active.Send a mail to branch stating, you weren’t aware of MAB and when you opened there was no MAB. And state a genuine reason and ask for waiver of MAB charges. Next, raise ombudsman complaint, stating they have charged MAB charges on zero balance account .

March 13, 2025 at 8:29 amBranch has to take permission from Head office for waiving off. They can’t do it unless you request for it.-

March 12, 2025 at 4:46 pmSame for Jupiter money, they are also associated with Federal bank. Initially, it was advertised as a zero balance acc, then it was converted to minimum balance of 5000, But they sent mail to all users about this, in the mail they mentioned that the charges will be applicable from next year so I closed it without any charges. Have you missed any such mail by chance? . Rest if you don’t want to pay let it be active, after some years it will be closed automatically.-
