Filed an FIR after a hit and run case

This happened today evening around 5 PM. A white Maruti Alto hit my car near the left tail light and didn’t stop and sped away. I have filed an FIR at the nearest police station, but they wrote my version of what happened on a white piece of paper and made me sign it. Then they asked me to submit it to some lady, who was not available then and the other officer there asked me leave the paper there as it is her job to file it. I am not even sure if they have filed my FIR. I was wondering if anyone has been through such cases, and have some knowledge of the law, what is my legal course of action here, after this. I am filing for insurance tomorrow, and not even sure about it. Also, is there some government website or document that I could go through to further understand the process. The car was my father’s and is a expensive car, BMW X1, so I got all the general taunts, like must be a rich brat, what does 50k mean to you … Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Insurance companies typically don’t require an FIR unless it’s a major accident. Based on your description, it doesn’t seem like a major damage. Just proceed with the claim—you shouldn’t face any issues

You would get the claim, that should not be a problem. If you want action against the other car, do not get your car repaired just now

Will the police take possession of both the cars until the case is decided in court? Because I have seen cars involved in accident rot for years in police yard

Okay, so basically, whenever you file an FIR, you should receive a copy of it, which includes the FIR number. In case you didn’t get it, you can go back to the police station and ask for the FIR.it’s your legal right. Also, every police station is required to publish the FIR on their official website, so you can check it online as well. Every state has their own website so just use google for this.
