February 15, 2025 at 6:33 pm**TL;DR:**I got a letter from the Regional Passport Office (RPO) saying I need to explain why action shouldn’t be taken against me for providing false information because I provided current address same as permanent address in my passport application.
**My Situation:**
* My permanent address is in my village, which is where my police verification was also done**.** All my documents and identity cards have my village address as my permanent address.
* My family and I moved from our village to a rented house in the city (about 8-9 km away) a while back. Since rent agreements aren’t really required in Karnal, I don’t have proof of my current residence. Although I am currently staying in Bangalore for almost 1 and half year for work purpose
* I applied for my passport on **October 18, 2024**, and received it **without police verification**.
* The day after applying, I got an email saying my file was sent for police verification and that I should follow up if it didn’t happen within 3 weeks. I didn’t take it too seriously because I had to return to **Bangalore for work** after a week.
* My **police verification happened after 2 months**, and the officer reported that I **don’t currently stay in my village**.
* On **January 20**, I received this letter asking me to provide an explanation within **10 days**. But today is **February 15**, and I just realised its seriousness. At first, I thought it was just about **failed police verification**, but after reading it properly today, I saw it also mentions **possible action under Sections 10(3)(b)(e) and 12(1)(b) of the Passports Act, 1967**.**What I Have Done So Far:**
* I have **sent an email to the RPO** at the address mentioned in the letter, but I don’t think they will actually read it or respond.
* I also call **Passport Seva Kendra**, and they told me to **book an appointment at the RPO**, meet the officer, explain my situation, and request them to resend my file for police verification.**Is this a serious issue? Can legal action actually be taken?**
**What’s the best way to explain my situation to the officer so this gets sorted smoothly?**

February 16, 2025 at 12:45 amSo you were issued a passport on post police verification basis, meaning passport is issued immediately not waiting for the result of police verification. However if the police verification comes back negative the RPO has the right to revoke the passport. In your case the policy verification report came back negative.Yes this is a serious issue, and at the very least your passport would be revoked. You need to contact the concerned office at the earliest and maybe request for re-sending it for PV and ensure it gets completed successfully.

February 16, 2025 at 6:23 amThank you for replying. My major concern is avoiding any legal trouble, especially arrest, since the sections mentioned in the letter include possible jail time for serious cases. I’ll contact the RPO ASAP and request re-verification, but do you think this could escalate to something more serious?

February 16, 2025 at 3:26 amIn addition to what foreign jackfruit has said, it would also be prudent for you to go to the police station and control the verification process (assuming rto sends it for reverification)-
