February 10, 2025 at 7:02 amHi everyone,I sold my motorcycle in December 2023. It was originally registered in Nagpur Maharashtra but sold to a buyer in West Bengal. At the time of sale, I was aware that a name transfer was required, but I wasn’t completely familiar with the exact steps. The buyer assured me that they would handle the transfer and that I only needed to visit the RTO for formalities.
A few days later, they told me they were facing issues with the transfer. The West Bengal RTO required an NOC from Nagpur RTO (where the bike was originally registered). Since I have been working in Kolkata for the past few years, it was difficult for me to travel to Nagpur immediately. However, after a few months, I managed to go there and arranged for the NOC through an agent. The agent couriered the document to me after I had already returned to Kolkata, which caused some delays in handing it over to the buyer. By the time the buyer submitted it, the RTO in West Bengal imposed a fine for the delay.
Now, the Howrah RTO is asking the buyer to pay approximately ₹18,000 for the name transfer. The buyer is refusing to pay and is now pressuring me to cover the amount, saying that since the bike is still in my name, any future fines or violations will be my responsibility. They are essentially telling me to either pay the amount or risk getting challans in my name.
I am looking for advice on what steps I should take next. The NOC process has been completed, but the name transfer has not yet been done. I want to avoid any legal trouble or being held responsible for traffic violations caused by the new owner. What should be my next course of action?
Would really appreciate any guidance from those who have dealt with similar situations. Thanks in advance!

February 10, 2025 at 7:07 amNAL,Just go to the RTO with all the sale documents and say that despite the sale being completed a long time ago the buyer has not transferred the name for costing reasons. This will make you safe and they will take any required action.

February 10, 2025 at 10:23 amJust to be on safe side, send a legal notice from a lawyer. If the vehicle is used for anything illegal you’ll have to face a lot of troubles. Consultant a lawyer a.s.a.p-

February 10, 2025 at 2:10 pmIgnorance is not an answer when it comes to stuff like this. When getting an NOC, the vehicle is essentially de-registered at your native state of MH and you need to pay remaining road tax again to West Bengal state. That is why WB RTO quoted that amount.
You also have to go through process of getting your remaining road tax amount back from Maharashtra RTO which can take months.
