February 28, 2025 at 2:27 pmI’m sharing my frustrating experience with HDFC Bank, hoping it might help others facing a similar issue. My account was debit-freezed at the end of October 2024 because my transactions supposedly didn’t match my student profile. What followed was months of harassment, incompetence, and bureaucratic nonsense.Timeline of Events:
October 2024: My account got frozen. I visited the branch the next day. A bank employee asked about my transactions, and after explaining, she said only the manager could lift the freeze.
Manager’s Response: Instead of helping, he immediately accused me of fraud and money laundering. I asked what steps I needed to take to remove the freeze. His response? “Your account will remain frozen. I will not lift it.”
HDFC Website Complaint: I raised a query and received a response saying I needed to submit income proof. Since I’m a student, I provided my father’s payslip.
Manager’s Reaction: He refused to accept my father’s payslip, saying, “I need your income proof, provide 3 years of ITR returns if you want the freeze lifted.” (Ridiculous for a student, right?)
One Month Later: My father and I visited the branch again, hoping for a resolution. My father politely asked, “Sir, a mistake has been made. What’s the solution?”
Manager’s Response? He shouted in front of customers and staff, calling me a criminal. My father got angry and asked for a solution, but the manager said, “Do whatever you want, I won’t lift the freeze.” He even threatened us by saying he knew the local SHO and that we’d have to go to the police station.
December: I raised a grievance with HDFC, but they closed my complaint, falsely stating it was resolved (because the manager lied).
End of December: I finally filed a complaint through RBI CMS (should’ve done this earlier). 8 days later, a branch employee called me and said, “Submit an account closure form to lift the freeze.”
I asked why I needed to close my account.
She replied, “It’s the only way.”
I demanded an official email about this, and she actually sent one.
Manager’s Next Move: After my RBI complaint, the same manager called me politely for a discussion.
He again insisted I close my account.
I refused, saying I just wanted the freeze lifted.
He said, “Okay, you can go.”
January: I got another email from the bank asking me to submit income proof. I replied that I already tried, but the manager refused to accept it.
Mid-January: RBI replied that my complaint was closed because the bank falsely told them I wasn’t providing documents. I lost all hope.
February: I submitted my father’s payslip again to a different employee, who assured me my account would be unfrozen. 15 days later, I received a rejection email:
“Your account will remain frozen as the payslip is not in your name.”
They again pressured me to close my account.
Fed up, I complained to CPGRAMS & DPG.
2 days later, the manager called my father and threatened him to close my account. My father refused.
I updated my CPGRAMS complaint to include the manager’s harassment and misconduct.
Finally, A Resolution (After 4 Months!)
Today, an HDFC employee visited my house for “home verification.” He was polite and said my account would be unfrozen in 3-4 days.
He later called and pressured me to send an email stating my issue was resolved.
I refused, saying I wouldn’t do it until the freeze was actually lifted.
He insisted that I send another mail to “initiate the process.” I said, “Send me an official email first.” He declined. So, I also refused to send anything.
After a few more calls, he said, “I’ll try to get it done today.”
And finally… my account was unfrozen!
TL;DR: HDFC Bank froze my student account unfairly, accused me of fraud, refused to accept my father’s payslip, pressured me to close my account, and lied to grievance departments. After months of fighting through RBI, CPGRAMS, and DPG complaints, I finally got my account unfrozen.

February 28, 2025 at 4:41 pmJust a 40k debit/credit transaction triggered their suspicion? This seems unbelievable bro. Even for a student, transactions worth a few lakhs isn’t out of the ordinary considering kids often take money from parents to buy shit. Heck 40k is so low that it could even be pocket money for most kids. This bank manager is truly out of his mind or may be there is more to the story.

February 28, 2025 at 3:32 pmPhew! Kudos for fighting it through. This happened with my driver last year. One month after he started working for me, his icici account got frozen. He was informed that there were too many suspicious UPI transactions and that he should open a current account and not savings account. This happened as our driver would make misc. purchases like groceries for me and I would GPay him the amount immediately. When the driver explained this to his bank, he was asked to submit an an employment letter from me, and a letter from me addressed to the bank manager explaining the case and I also wrote asking them to verify that indeed all UPI transactions are small amounts < 5,000/- . His an account was unfrozen pretty soon.

March 1, 2025 at 7:04 amSee, in life you will come across many legal issues(not saying because of your fault), consider the confidence this will instill in you for the law, for future. And also since you have already won the biggest hurdle in this, getting compensation won’t be any more difficult. Talk with your parents. Biggest mistake of our older generation is, instilling the fear in younger generation that law is not helpful and fear the judicial process and court. Break that cycle.Anyways, whatever you finally decide is ultimately your choice. Atb 🥂

Trust me they will literally beg you not to close the account. Fill up the account closure from with all the possible complaints. I did it too. I had my fun.

February 28, 2025 at 4:43 pmHey, I just read your post, and I’m going through a **similar nightmare with Kotak Bank** right now. I need advice on how to escalate this because their support is completely unhelpful.# Timeline of Events:
* **Feb 9, 2025**: I raised a **complaint on the Kotak Bank Portal** after noticing my **Kotak 811 account was blocked.**
* **Feb 10, 2025**: Kotak sent me this message: *“Dear customer, your Kotak811 a/c XXXX2905 is blocked as your transactions are not in line with your profile. To start unblocking, visit:* [*https://1.kmbl.in/KOTAKB/HYM8d9”*]() I followed the process and completed verification:
* Verified details via **DigiLocker** and submitted my **office ID card as income proof**.
* **Feb 11:** A Kotak executive called me for **on-call verification** and assured me my account would be activated soon.
* **Feb 12:** Another call from a **local agent** for **home verification**, but I wasn’t home. I called him back and provided an alternate location, and he said he’d visit but **never showed up.**-

February 28, 2025 at 4:43 pm* **Feb 15:** Got a response to my first online complaint saying, ***“We have highlighted this concern to our relevant team to get it checked at the earliest.”***
* **Feb 19:** Followed up via email.
* **Feb 23:** Received a response: ***“We have forwarded your concern to our team. In this case, we request you to visit the branch.”***
* **Feb 27:** Visited my **base branch** and submitted a **request letter + Aadhar card** for unblocking.
* Made to wait **10 minutes** due to a **server issue** and was asked to return later.
* Returned after an hour and met **Transaction Supervisor**, who took my request and discussed it with his team for **20-30 minutes**.
* He came back and said, **“Your service request is permanently closed without any further comments, so we cannot proceed right now”**
* The branch staff **tried calling the backend team**, but no one answered.
* **Final response:** *”We cannot accept your unblocking request at this moment.”* 😡
* **Feb 27:** Same day evening sent an email explaining this, but Kotak **misunderstood it as a chargeback request** and replied on **Feb 28 (Today)**: *“Regarding the concerns raised by you for Chargeback Request… We apologize for the inconvenience caused… We have highlighted this to our specialized division.”*
* I replied again, clarifying: *”My actual request is regarding the unblocking of my Kotak 811 savings account, which has been placed under a total freeze due to ‘****TXN PATTERN ANOMALY’*** *as communicated by your team.”*# Need Advice:
1. Since my **branch and backend team are useless**, should I directly **file an RBI CMS complaint** now?
2. Should I try **CPGRAMS and DPG like you did**?
3. Is there any way to **force Kotak to take action** instead of making me run in circles?
4. They seem to be **deliberately ignoring my emails**—any suggestions on how to escalate further?Would really appreciate any advice from you or anyone else who has faced this with Kotak! Thanks in advance.

February 28, 2025 at 4:59 pmRBI complaint can be filed only after 30 days of first complaint, I would suggest to document and keep all communication over email. Send update to your ticket if there is a telephonic discussion with the points discussed so that you can keep everything as proof in front of RBI if it comes to that -

February 28, 2025 at 5:09 pmFirst complaint with kotak grievance redressal then only you can complain on rbi. If rbi is not useful or you didn’t get satisfactory redressal you can go with cpgrams and dpg.Few things to keep in mind. Document everything ask them to mail about the things they want you to do like Document submission or verification.
When complaining on rbi or cpgrams attach all the mails and proofs you have

February 28, 2025 at 5:12 pmThank you for your advice! I have already raised a complaint with Kotak’s grievance redressal team and documented all communications over email. However, their responses have been vague, and they keep redirecting me without any concrete resolution.I will wait for **30 days from my initial complaint** before escalating to **RBI CMS** if the issue remains unresolved. If that doesn’t help, I’ll proceed with **CPGRAMS and DPG** as you suggested.
I’ve been making sure to **keep records of all emails and responses**, including details of document submissions and verification steps. When escalating, I’ll attach all these proofs for better clarity.
Appreciate your guidance! If you have any additional tips, please let me know.

March 5, 2025 at 12:14 pmKotak grievance team responded with – **’We regret to inform you that as per the confirmation received by our Risk Controlling Unit, we are unable to process your request for unfreezing the account. Please visit the branch to submit an account closure form.’** Basically, they’re forcing me to close my account.I have no intention of closing it since it’s my secondary account, but just for fun (like you did), I’ll escalate this to RBI Ombudsman, National Consumer Helpline, CPGRAMS, and other relevant authorities. Let’s see how they respond! 😆

March 1, 2025 at 4:34 amI am not sure if HDFC will go for that length for 40k debit and credit. I don’t know the exact picture of your transactions so it is hard to believe that a bank manager will shout someone as criminal in front of staff or threaten your father. It’s a private bank where people might get punched on face without reprieve and too with getting dismal pay. Your story is unbelievable and if bank says money has been laundered, I don’t believe that someone will use a word “launder” without serious money movement.-

March 1, 2025 at 4:48 amSee man, you are not the only who is student, I was also student once and an Indian college student. My transactions were of similar amounts. But there are people studying private universities like Manipal, NMIMS etc who has much larger amount transactions. You know what’s the salary of a HDFC bank manager, may be 30k at max and private bank managers are with such flexible back bone that they touch feets of customer at instant if threatened of legal action. Further, I will just punch hard on face and leave. And not me, everyone will else will do same.
Unfortunately your transactions have to shady enough for HDFC to take action. I don’t believe this story unless there is something shady. This is redditt.. go with your story public on LinkedIn..

March 1, 2025 at 5:02 amActually redditors will scream outrage on anything without evidence, I have been private bank customer from an ordinary customer to preferred banking customer. I don’t believe your story without evidence. If a bank had done such thing with me,
1. Crush them publicly: I will write to all leading newspapers, portals and with all evidence, post things on LinkedIn tagging all the new age fin influencers, HDFC C Suite executives.
2. Take them legally: I will file a complaint in Consumer court
If I would be you, I don’t know you understand hindi but nanga kar sadako par ghumaunga HDFC walon ko.
So all sympathies with evidence but none without evidences.
