May 2, 2026 at 10:19 amThis is a throw away account. I need legal help. Background : I am a female, 30+ years in age, married with a daughter. Love marriage (6 years of marriage) and a decade of relationship before getting married. Currently unemployed, taking care of the kid, looking to join work soon. Financially dependent on the husband. My MIL verbally abuses me and I have been recording it in audio format. Recently when MIL started abusing me verbally, I started the audio recording. MIL and husband both were present. MIL told the husband that I am recording, he got angry and said that she needs proof that’s why she is recording and he also told me to stop recording. When I took the phone in my hand, he snatched it forcefully from my hands and threw it away. The phone however was still working, with only visible damage to the back glass panel. Husband formatted my phone without my permission and is refusing to get it repaired or purchase me a new one. Furthermore, he is threatening me that whenever I record, he shall throw my phone again and not give it to me at all.
I need help with the following questions:
1. Are audio recordings useful in court (if this ends up in a court case)
2. Is verbal abuse from my mother in law included in domestic violence? This verbal abuse has caused me mental health issues (doctors can attest)
3. Throwing and damaging my phone without my permission is considered under domestic violence or not?
4. I need help to have this damage to my phone, reported or recorded lawfully (which might help in future if it comes to court case/divorce)
5. As I am currently dependent on my husband financially I can’t risk going to the police and getting them involved as I live with him and don’t want to bear anymore abuse (mentally and financially)
6. Is there a way to file any sort of report which helps me in the future (if required) and the police/authorities don’t have to inform him regarding it because if he knows that I have filled any report/complaint then I will have to face dire circumstances and I am scared of it.
7. Until I get back to work and have myself secured financially again. How do I keep a legally acceptable record of any abuse to me or my daughter without being attacked again.
8. Any suggestions of reliable and trustworthy women’s NGO which actually help will be appreciated.
TDLR: Husband damaged my phone, is it domestic violence? Need help.
