Insurance lapsed almost 10 years ago. Can I get my premiums back? (Huge amount so need advice pls)

My mum paid 20L so far and she couldn’t pay the remaining instalments so the insurance was lapsed. This was back in 2014.

She can’t read English and the agent told her that she’d get whatever she paid back in case she couldn’t pay the instalments and had the documents signed. But on the paper it was something else.

The notice for instalment reminders went to an old house which we moved from so we didn’t get any mail.

Since it’s a huge amount, my mum doesn’t want to let go and wants to know if she can get it back?

PS: We had sent a legal notice to them recently and they replied saying nah, it’s baseless, you should’ve read the document etc.
