January 22, 2025 at 4:07 pmI am a farmer from Uttar Pradesh, and Iโm interested in selling vegetables, fruits, and pulses directly to consumers online. Currently, due to the involvement of middlemen, the end consumers in urban areas are paying a much higher price for fresh produce, while we, the farmers, are selling them at very low rates. For example, cauliflower is sold at โน60 per kg in Noida, while we farmers are selling it at โน2-4 per kg.I want to bypass the middlemen and sell directly to customers online to ensure a fair price for both parties. However, Iโm not sure about the legalities of such an arrangement. Specifically, I have the following questions:
1. Is it legally allowed for farmers to sell their produce directly to consumers in India?
2. What licenses, permits, or registrations do I need to get started?
3. Are there any regulations I should be aware of while selling agricultural products online (e.g., food safety, packaging, etc.)?
4. Do I need to register my business or comply with any particular laws regarding e-commerce or agricultural trade?Iโd appreciate any insights or advice from those familiar with the legal requirements for direct-to-consumer agricultural sales. Thanks in advance!

January 23, 2025 at 6:50 ami meant if you want to sell via an open shop or a cart.. for shop, you have additional costs.. nothing much for cart on road.. also we sell to middlemen as they have lot of contacts and can buy in bulk.. selling bulk as an individual is tough..

January 22, 2025 at 6:15 pmSelling directly is 100% legal. The problem is logistics. How will you deliver your product directly to the consumer, you need to store the vegetables, you will have to either have your own logistics (mini truck etc) or work with a logistics partner. Problem is that if your scale is not large enough these expenses will render your business unprofitable.-

January 24, 2025 at 8:51 amVegetable farmers in subzi mandis sell directly to consumers all the time. It is common for farmers who own lands close to urban areas to load their vegetables such as bhindi and gobhi in Tata Magic type of vehicle and sell directly to consumers in the local subzi mandi.
