May 4, 2026 at 5:14 pmHi, I am a student living in North Campus in a flat with three other people. Our lease ends in May, but our landlord is now forcing us to stay for one more month and pay rent even though we do not want to.To give some context, about 1β1.5 months ago, two of us asked him if we could extend our stay by one month. We offered to pay 60% of the total rent between the two of us, even though individually we usually pay less. We made this request because our exams continue until the end of June. The other two flatmates were planning to move out, so the remaining two rooms would have been empty, and we could not afford to pay the full rent ourselves.
However, he refused and said he wanted the full rent. He also said that if he found new tenants, he would not allow us to stay. Since we could not afford the entire rent, we also decided to move out and made other arrangements.
Now, he is asking us to stay for one more month, likely because he has not been able to find new tenants due to the exam season. He is also saying that even if we do not stay, he will not return the security deposit of two monthsβ rent for two of us.
He often screams at us, verbally abuses us, and does not let us speak. He is also refusing to talk to our parents and does not answer their calls. He lives on the floor above us, which makes it easy for him to come downstairs This behavior has been ongoing for the past 11 months over small and petty issues.
We do not know what to do. He has the only copy of the rental agreement. Around βΉ30,000 of my money is stuck with him, and I urgently need it to pay the security deposit for another place.
I would be very grateful if you could guide us on what we can do in this situation.
