        **Background/Context**
I am from Jhakhand. My father passed away in March 2024. It took me 3+ months in effort to get a proper death certificate where Wife’s name is present.
At registrar office they made it difficult. They repeatedly denied to put Wife’s or Mother’s name. They asked me to show any Death Certificate or rules for this. ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ
Death Certificate had fields for Mother’s Name and Wife’s name and they left it intentionally.

After so much struggle I got it somehow. This was needed so much as proof my Mother is also wife of deceased father. And this helped us in claiming so many things.

**Q.** I have my mother now. And her last name doesn’t match with our name(all kids). What are some legal document I can get confirming we are her legal heir.
I am just preparing myself for worse. Please advise. ๐Ÿ™

Changing your mother’s last name is going to be slightly long process.

Here’s a simplified guide to help you through the process:

          1. **Prepare an Affidavit**: Draft an affidavit on a stamp paper stating your old name and the new name. Get it signed by a first-class magistrate or an IAS officer if the surname is different.

          2. **Publish in Newspapers**: Publish the name change notice in two newspapers (one in the local language and one in English). Keep the original copies of the published notices.

          3. **Public Notice**: Make a public notice with two witnesses and their signatures, names, addresses, and phone numbers.

          4. **Prepare a CD**: Create a CD with the name change matter and a printout of the same.

          5. **Gather Documents**: Attach your ID proof, mark sheet, two photos, and a request letter with your name, address, mobile number, email id, and signature.

          6. **Submit to Gazette Office**: Go to the Department of Publication in Delhi and submit the documents along with the fee (around Rs. 1100).

          7. **Check Gazette**: Check the weekly gazette online and download the part where your name change is published.

          8. **Update Other Documents**: Use the gazette notification to update your name in other documents like Aadhaar card, PAN card, passport, voter ID card, etc.
