April 30, 2026 at 3:32 amMy husband grew up in a joint family( his father and one uncle), and after 5 continuous years of waterlogging in the 50 year old ancestral house, took two separate loans on flats next to each other, one for our family( me, him and his mother) and one for the uncle. At the time of taking the loan 5 years ago, his father was suffering from Parkinson’s and he thought he could use full family support. Uncle showed interest in buying flat ( they used to live on the ground floor and had it worse), but at the time of payment asked if my husband can take a loan and he will pay back as he won’t get a loan ( he earns 5 k per month from small grocery shop and his wife earns 10 k from tuitions, they also receive some 4-5 k each month from policies/ deposits etc. Uncle basically got all bank deposits and policies from from husbands grandfather savings( grandfather served railways for 38 years)and continues to keep FDs or policies to get interests. In 2021 the deal was that he will pay by the principal of 25 lakh by2027 and my husband has been secretly paying their interest ( uncle is uneducated, dosent get the concept). They initially made a lot of noise about how they are going to pay back by 2026 only. Recently upon being asked if their 2027 plan is still on, his wife said that they can’t do before 2029 as their daughters college is going on ( they have to pay 3 lakhs in 4 years for college). Property is in husband’s name , they have been staying there for 5 years. We live in away in a different city now and my mother in law basically uses 70% of her pension to support uncles family. In the event that they again change the payment date in future, what are our options?
