May 9, 2026 at 12:40 pmHeyJoined an Ahmedabad IT company in May 2025 as a Trainee Engineer. Signed a 2-year service agreement with a bond of Rs. 87,500 โ covering training cost, salary paid, and opportunity cost.
Now I’m leaving early for a better opportunity and HR is pushing for the full amount. Completed 1 year
The thing is โ there were 33 trainees in our batch, all given the same external training. Even if I account for that generously, Rs. 87,500 per person doesn’t hold up mathematically. The actual cost attributable to me individually is significantly lower.
I know Section 74 of the Indian Contract Act says companies have to prove actual damages โ they can’t just collect the full bond amount automatically.
Before escalating, I want to send HR a polite email asking for an itemized cost breakdown specific to me.
Has anyone done this successfully? Did the company back down once they couldn’t produce receipts?
Also open to Ahmedabad-based labour lawyer recommendations if it comes to that.

May 9, 2026 at 3:44 pmasking for a detailed cost breakdown first actually sounds reasonable because once training was done in a batch format companies sometimes quote one combined number without employees really knowing how it was calculated individually. also the fact that you already completed one full year out of the two changes the situation a bit compared to someone leaving immediately after joining. a lot of these disputes end up becoming negotiation matters in practice rather than dramatic court battles especially when employees stay professional and keep communication in writing. did the agreement specifically mention any prorated reduction after partial completion or was the same full amount payable regardless of whether someone left after 2 months or after 1 year
