UA friend of mine got married in 2024. She has been separated from her husband for almost a year and has filed a domestic violence (DV) case, but divorce proceedings have not yet been initiated.
Her passport is now due for renewal. Currently, her passport contains only her first name, with no last name mentioned. She would like to add a last name, but all her existing documents (such as Aadhaar, PAN, etc.) still reflect only her first name.
Additionally, her marriage was not legally registered, only a ceremonial wedding took place. Since no divorce has been finalized, she is still legally considered married. However, none of her documents were updated after marriage.
She attempted to renew her passport, but the last name field remains blank which she can edit. She is unsure about the correct approach:
Should she add a last name during passport renewal even though her previous passport and other documents do not include it? If so, what documents would be required?
Or should a she renew the passport with only her first name as it is now, and update her name in other documents later after divorce and then apply for a passport reissue?
Since her documents are not updated after marriage then should she mention single in passport renewal application?
What would be the best course of action in this situation?
