Need help with the way lawyer is handling a case

A friend(31M) of mine has filed for divorce case (contested) in Bangalore. From the day 1 one the respondent (27F) never attended and the final judgement was supposed to be on April 29. The lawyer insisted that he doesn’t attend the final judgement hearing. Since the lawyer asked him not to attend, he asked me to keep an eye. So, I was in the premises and when the magistrate asked what I wanted and the case number I told, my friend is on the way and gave the case number. The magistrate just smiled and said ask your friend to come tomorrow we can have the hearing tomorrow.

When this was briefed to the lawyer and we said that we believe the judge expects us to be here but the lawyer firmly said that “petitioners are not allowed during judgement”. Then case got postponed again on 30th and may 2nd. Now it’s on June.

Should they be concerned or is this normal?
