Hi, I am an Indian resident software engineer married to my indian wife who is also a software engineer. I have got a job offer in Canada British columbia and I am planning to move within 3 months. Given the nature of our profession, we might move to other country from Canada preferably US down the line over the lifetime.

I recently got married 15 days back and I have got my marriage certificate.

I need advice on the complications that might arise post last name change of my wife to my last name with respect to the documents name inconsistency if my wife inherits my last name, i.e. her Passport, Adhaar, PAN and other govt documents will have my last name but her marksheets and college degrees would still have her maiden name.

I need advice on the issues or discrepancies that might arise abroad in future in her career or other places and if those discrepancies are common and manageable?

Given these inconsistencies, should we change her last name or never change it and keep her maiden name.

Changing last name post marriage is common globally and women in US and Canada also changes their last name, so i feel it should be fine. However i am concerned about proving her qualifications with marksheets and degrees with her maiden name might affect her in her career but wanted to know if it is manageable with our marriage certificate or some sort of affidavit.

Please advice if she should change the last name or not and what are the consequences of both the cases specially in abroad.

        P.S. edit 1:
        1. I have not applied for the visa yet and I was waiting on the documents updation.
        2. We would be going on work visa for 3 years not through express entry PR.
        3. We are more inclined towards her last name change. So we will ensure all the documents will have last name update. We are only concerned from her career aspect if it will be disastrous in canada to prove that she is the same person who is in her degrees and marksheets.
        4. If we do not change the last name now but we will be changing it within a year or two (i suppose we won’t be getting a PR/ citizenship by that time) and if we change the name later, will it cause even more complications in visa update as previous visa was issued to maiden name. I just want to avoid paperwork as much as possible after moving there.
I can do all the paperwork for name change now in India as I need to change only in one country. After I move, I will have to deal with paperwork in both countries for paperwork.

        Which is more manageable:
Changing name now and deal with proving her degrees and marksheets (and other documents required if any with maiden name) that she is the same person or moving without changing and later getting into process of name changes after the move?

        Edit 2:
Since we are not in Canada yet, we do not have any documents there, once we get there, we will have more documents to deal with like driving license, SSN and additional documents that might be required. I am assuming changing the name post move would add the hassle of dealing with name change in those documents as well. Is it worth it to change name later?
Even if I change name later, I would still have to deal with inconsistencies in the marksheets and degrees with maiden name post name change so why not do it now?

Your wife can keep her maiden name on all documents (Passport, Aadhaar, PAN). To prove your marriage for visa purposes (Canada/US), your Marriage Certificate is sufficient. You can also add your name as a spouse in her passport during its next renewal without changing her surname .
But if she chooses to change her name, she must update her Passport, Aadhaar, and PAN to ensure they match her new legal identity. The discrepancy with her educational degrees (which will remain in her maiden name) is very common and is legally resolved using a “Same Name Affidavit” or the Marriage Certificate.

              Thanks for your input!
We will eventually get the last name change, should we do it now as it will require additional paperwork to do it later.
We will definitely change the surname in all documents i.e. Adhar, PAN and Passport.

Also, i have update the post for more clarity, please check.

Me and my wife got married in feb this year and decided its not worth changing names. there is endless red-tape, Soo many documents. If you want to immigrate dont change the name. You never know when her employer in canada or US can ask for her school transcripts or college transcripts where her name probably would be different. Its just not worth it. Imagine how difficult it is to get a passport here now multiply that by 100 and then per document.
