March 22, 2025 at 4:01 amHi everyone,My friend recently got engaged to his girlfriend of 5 years. Unfortunately, due to many misunderstandings and conflicts, they’ve mutually decided to call off the engagement.
Now, my friend’s family is requesting a signed document from the girl’s side confirming that the breakup was mutual, to prevent any legal or social issues in the future. However, the girl’s family has refused to provide any signed document. They’ve said they just want to stay silent and part ways without further involvement.
Since both families are from different states (Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu), we’re concerned about any potential issues that could arise later. What legal steps can my friend take to protect himself in this situation? Is there any alternative to a signed document that would offer similar protection? Would consulting a lawyer be advisable in this case?
Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

March 22, 2025 at 4:29 amIt depends on the families, in such cases disputes should not happen, if any clear all financials now.
Hindu marriage act won’t be applicable since you were never married, any signing documents won’t be enough either if they want to cause you trouble, so chill and peace out.Remember to clear all financials.

March 22, 2025 at 5:33 amThank you for the advice. Just to clarify, is it unnecessary to have any legal documents signed to prevent potential disputes in the future? Also, what if the girl or her family shows the engagement pictures to the boy’s future wife to create problems? While the boy intends to be upfront about the past engagement, how can he provide proof that it was officially called off and resolved?

March 22, 2025 at 7:01 amLaw recognises marriage, that is 7 phere around the agni, other legal proof can be wedding card, marriage certificate, wedding photos.
You may sign legal agreement but it’s difficult to cover so many things into it, if not properly written usually the court won’t care about it if they want to rule in favour of women.Proper legal agreement can be contract but conditions won’t be fulfilled in this condition. If there was exchange of money or property then you should have a legal agreement.

March 22, 2025 at 8:18 amUnder Hindu Marriage, there is no provision for Engagement and also the engagement is also NOT documented. Is it a Christian Engagement? Here they would have signed a document and submitted, which needs to be withdrawn. If the parties are Hindus, no agreements is valid even if you get it done. The boy’s side could be worried about the potential criminal cases against him. A message or an email exchange between them stating that they are not going ahead with the marriage which is agreeable to both the parties should suffice. It can be treated as communication between the parties. Make sure that there is no force, coercion, duress, blackmailing or any such sort of language used while exchanging this communication.
