February 8, 2025 at 8:03 pmAfter looking at a 1 BHK for rent online, I went to visit the place. When I reached, the landlady showed me a different place (“next door”), which was just one huge room. She assured me that she would set up a kitchen and install electricals, claiming that the actual place listed online had not yet been vacated.
After about 20 minutes of convincing and making promises, she asked me for a token advance. I told her that I needed to check with my parents before proceeding.
She then distracted me by asking different questions, gave life advice, and brought the conversation back to the token advance. In the moment, without thinking twice, I transferred βΉ10,000.
After leaving the place, I consulted with my friends and family, and it was clear that her promises about setting up a kitchen didn’t make sense.
I realized I had made a mistake. Within 22 minutes of leaving her place, I called her and informed her that I did not want to proceed, as the things she promised didnβt seem feasible. I requested a refund and also mentioned that I had intended to consult others before making a payment, but she rushed me into it.
She tried to convince me again and said she would talk to me the next day. The next day, she outright refused to return the money, saying no one ever refunds a token advance. I cried and pleaded with her, to which she said she would deduct some amount (didn’t mention how much) and return the rest after discussing with her family. She then ended the call.
I don’t know what to do now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
