January 20, 2025 at 6:28 amI’m in a really tough spot right now and could use some advice or help. A guy I trusted just took my money and ran off, and now he’s completely blocked me everywhere. The money he took is **super important** because I have to pay it to someone else soon.I don’t know what to do. I tried reaching out to him through mutual contacts, but it feels like he’s disappeared. I’m feeling so stressed because this isn’t just any money—it’s something I absolutely cannot afford to lose.
If anyone has been through something similar or has advice on what steps I can take legally or otherwise, I’d really appreciate it. I’m even considering filing a police complaint, but I don’t know how effective it’ll be.

January 20, 2025 at 6:42 amIf it’s money you can’t afford to lose then why do you play games with it? Why can’t you just keep it in bank account?-

January 20, 2025 at 6:44 amAnyways, if it’s online transfer then file cyber complaint and freeze his account. Pay police to drag his ass to the station and settle the matter. -

January 20, 2025 at 2:51 pm25k is not a big amount, forgot it, you’re not going to get it back. You’ll spend 30k to lawyer to recover 25k. You learnt a 25k paid lession in life.-

January 20, 2025 at 6:45 amI’m also in a similar position. I made a reddit post about it recently and got mixed advice.Based on the advice, I first decided to approach police. Police told me it is a civil matter and I should approach a lawyer. Police will file a complaint, but without court order, they cannot take any action.
At my request, they made a phone call to the person, and told him in a firm manner that he should return my money.
The person got scared and promised that he’d return it the same day.
However, so far he hasn’t returned. So now I am considering going to a lawyer and filing a suit for recovery.

January 20, 2025 at 9:52 am25K is not a substantial enough amount for which legal action is viable.
But legal theatrics, like sending a legal notice to his home, could help you get your money back.Filing a civil suit to get just 25K is not a smart thing; the lawyer’s fee alone would be higher than that, not to mention the associated headaches.
Sure, you can add the legal cost to your suit as well and add mental torture (which rarely works). But initially, you would need to pay it yourself, and if/when you win, you might get an order to get the same from him, but then again, executing an order for such a small amount is a headache and requires legal fees again.

January 20, 2025 at 9:57 amHow much typically would you say lawyer fees would be for such a case?-

January 20, 2025 at 10:05 amGenerally, standard charges are:1. Legal notice ~₹2-3K.
2. Per hearing, an advocate may charge ~₹4-5K + a/l 500 for munshi. Now, how many hearings are required to conclude the proceeding depends on the facts of the case.
Additionally,
The court may or may not allow the full cost of legal proceedings, as then it can become a hostile tool to harass people.
I can just employ the best, but unnecessary, advocate for the smallest offence and bankrupt the opposite party by the legal cost alone, so despite what the advocate might say, “legal cost recuperation” works within reason only.-

January 20, 2025 at 11:14 amYes, a munshi is a clerk employed by an advocate, mostly at junior or lower court levels, as their practice is not big enough to accommodate dedicated reception or paralegal staff. The munshi facilitates all those roles and is often seen as a driver and fixer.Ideally, you should be paying them something to the effect of ₹200-500, as they make your work much more efficient and faster by helping the advocate.
In many cases, advocates take something extra in the name of the munshi. Whether they give them a cut or not is debatable.
