I was trying to update my PAN details (including name mismatch correction) after my status was changed to NRI by CPC. CPC confirmed that everything was updated correctly on their side.
However, when I tried to proceed through the Protean eGov Technologies portal, I kept getting this error:
# > “Selected Citizenship not matched with Income Tax Database.”
So basically:
Income Tax database → showing updated (NRI) ✅
Protean portal → still showing old data ❌
👉 Till date, Protean still shows the same error for me.

⚠️ Important clarification
NRI status update is done separately on Income Tax (ITD) side
PAN correction (like name mismatch update) is a different process
Even though my NRI status was already updated in ITD, Protean was not reflecting it — which blocked my correction request.

What actually worked
I applied through UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited instead.
During the very first step of the form, it showed my status as Foreign Citizen, which confirmed that their system was already synced with the Income Tax Department.
That’s when I realized the issue wasn’t CPC — it was clearly Protean not syncing.

How I applied
Filled the PAN correction form on UTIITSL website
Paid fees online (multiple options available — I used UPI)
Selected:
Physical PAN (foreign delivery)
e-PAN
Chose physical document submission instead of Aadhaar e-KYC

🌍 Important (for people outside India)
If the UTIITSL website doesn’t open from your country:
Use a VPN with India location
or
Ask someone in India to fill the form for you

📦 Documents I sent (self-attested)
I couriered documents to Chennai:
Old PAN card
Foreign passport
OCI card (no option on site, but I included it anyway)
Driving license
Printed application form
Payment acknowledgment
No notary required — just self-sign everything.

⏱️ Timeline
Courier delivered to UTIITSL Chennai
Around 3 weeks later → e-PAN received via email

🔑 Final takeaway
NRI status update (ITD side) and PAN correction are two different things
CPC / Income Tax side was already correct
Protean eGov Technologies system was not syncing (still not, in my case)
UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited had updated data and worked smoothly
