February 15, 2025 at 3:54 pmHi everyone,I’m in a frustrating situation and need some advice.
On Feb 1, 2025, my scooter was stolen from my friend’s place. After multiple requests, the police finally registered an FIR the next day. But honestly, they didn’t even bother searching for it because I’m just a regular middle-class guy without VIP status or political connections.
Fast forward, I found my own stolen scooter about 60 km away from where it was taken. I immediately went to the location, confirmed it was mine, and called 112 to inform the local police. They took the scooter and parked it at the police station.
Now, it’s been a week, and the police are refusing to return my scooter. They keep giving me excuses like “we’re busy” or “you’re not the only case.” I feel like they are deliberately delaying it.
What can I do to get my vehicle back ASAP? Who should I complain to? Any legal steps I can take?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance! -

Seeking possession of a vehicle now recovered is a commonly desired notion of owners, and is pretty easy for advocates. Process is called “Release of case property” a.k.a. superdaari. This requires maximum 2 hearings, provided IO cooperates and does his job. Even if not, hearings get extended by at best 1-2 further.

February 15, 2025 at 10:24 pmI hope you take the right way instead of the easy way.Right way being hiring an advocate and letting him handle everything, you just have to show up once or twice. Property release application process is usually easy. Shouldn’t take more than 2-3 weeks to get your scooter.
Easy way being pay up 2k to one of the lower hawaldars at the chowki, get it done within a week

February 16, 2025 at 2:09 amThe same thing happened to me once, but we found our scooter instead of the police.
Me and my friend were having dinner at a local Chinese restaurant, we came out and the scooter was gone.
We contacted the cops, they were abusive and started to bribe and said I know where your bike is, pay me 35k and l’ll bring that to you.
Somehow we found our bike, a drunk person mistakenly took our bike instead of his, surprisingly the keys worked for each other. The havaldar wanted to charge money from us, but we blocked their no and went home and slept.
I hate cops till date due to this.Tell us OP what happens next in your case.

February 16, 2025 at 4:58 amNal but had a similar experience, actually worse. Initially when my scooter was stolen police didn’t file formal FIR but informal complaint asking to wait for few days. When it was recovered after few days, they brought the scooter in and forced me to file an FIR then despite my pleas. I had to go through the formal processes, hire a lawyer, file an application in court etc while my vehicle was lying impounded at the police station. Took around 3 months and a few court visits before getting back my vehicle-

February 18, 2025 at 8:18 amWhy on earth did you call the police then and there? After seeing for yourself what sort of useless bastards the police are.I would’ve taken the vehicle home on my own and then later inform the police that I’ve found it and thank them for not doing anything at all.
