January 21, 2025 at 6:17 pmA close relative of mine is trying to sell their land through a lawyer, the lawyer has been handling the talks between the actual buyer and the sellers and the sellers have met the actual buyer only once. Now, the negotiations have ended and the final price has been finalized. The lawyer said a token amount will be given to the sellers and they need to sign an agreement that says they shall not sell the land to anyone else other than the buyer who has given the token amount.
Here comes the concern, the lawyer said he’d be taking 2% of the token amount as his cut/commission and he wrote down the full token amount and the amount with his 2% deducted, upon calculating he actually deducted 7% instead of 2%. Note : The transaction is not done yet, is it a couple days later.
Is it wise to go ahead with the deal after confronting the lawyer or is this a really big red flag(I think it is) and drop the idea?
TL;DR : Lawyer mentioned 2% but wrote down the amount by deducting 7% on a paper for reference, is it wise to go ahead after confronting him or just quit the idea?
Thanks in advance.
