Rent increase higher than agreement—what are my options?

My landlord is asking for a rent increase that’s higher than what was mentioned in our rental agreement (which states ~6%).

I’m currently paying ₹12.5k for a 1RK. The agreement is ending this month, and now he’s asking me to either vacate or pay ₹17k, saying the room is “too big” for a 1RK.

Is there any legal protection in this situation, or can landlords revise rent like this once the agreement ends?

Also, has anyone dealt with something similar—did negotiation help, or is vacating the only realistic option?
