Hi,

What are consequences of unregistered rental agreement for both tenant and owner?

I had a rental agreement with the landlord for FY 24-25 (12 months). I have the legal rental agreement document with stamps and signatures on it. But the owner didn’t register it to sub registry office. Will I be still able to claim HRA rent? I have receipts of all 12 months. And will the owner face any trouble while filing their ITR?

If your concern is about the HRA claim, that should be fine. Did the owner share the PAN number? Registering rental agreement is to protect rights and will be useful for a civil case, but for income tax it shouldn’t be a problem.

Yes shared both PAN and rental agreement with HR. My only concern is HRA claim and since owner is senior citizen I don’t want them to either face any challenges while filing ITR.
