May 9, 2026 at 1:34 pmMy friend got scammed of ₹1.5 lakhs while trying to buy a product from an Instagram shop. Need urgent advice on what to do next. The seller looked genuine at first. He shared proper product videos, GST number, WhatsApp communication, payment details, everything. So my friend trusted him.
Timeline:
– 6 May: Paid around ₹74,000 for the device.
– Later the seller said GST bill charges were not included and asked for ₹20,000 extra with some story about billing issues.
– 7 May: Another ₹20,000 was paid.
– After 2 days, he called again saying the previous payment had “failed in the system” and because of that the product was not dispatched.
– He even made us believe there was a system/payment issue and said we had to pay the full amount again including GST, and then earlier payments would be refunded.
– My friend panicked and paid another ₹57,000.
– 8 May: He again demanded ₹37,000 more to “complete the payment” before refunding anything.
At this point I realized it was a scam and told my friend to stop paying immediately.
Total amount lost is around ₹1.5 lakhs.
We have:
– WhatsApp chats
– Call recordings
– UPI/bank transaction details
– Instagram account details
– GST number shared by him
– Phone numbers
What should be our next steps now?
– Cyber crime complaint?
– Bank chargeback?
– FIR?
– Is there any chance of recovery?
Please help if anyone has dealt with something similar.

May 9, 2026 at 1:41 pmWhat was the mode of payment for all the transactions? Was any transaction made via Credit Card? If yes, you can claim back the entire amount by the Credit Card Company. Initiate a charge back request stating the product was never dispatched and the seller is a scamster. Attach all evidences and email them. You’ll get entire amount credited back into your Bank A/C.
If you used UPI, then reach out cybercell and UPI platform. You can report it via your app’s “Raise Dispute” option or contact the recipient.

May 9, 2026 at 5:11 pmMost of these scams happen over UPI. Highly doubt a scammer would have the infra to take credit card payments as that would need a payment gateway integration etc.

May 9, 2026 at 1:45 pm*Not a legal advise but an idea , search on google ” iplogger ” what it does is basically create a url/link and if someone clicks on that link you can track the ip adress , how you can plan this- talk to scammer on wp / send a photo of transaction (so that the probability of him opening the link increases) with attached link(iplogger) ( search on google for better clarification)- once he click on the link you’ll get his ip , then go to cyber crime with his location and handle from their.-

May 9, 2026 at 3:33 pmthe repeated payment stories about gst system failure and needing to pay again before refunds is honestly a very common pressure pattern in these scams because once someone has already paid once the scammer keeps creating urgency and confusion to extract more. the good thing here is that you stopped before sending the last 37k and you still have chats recordings bank details and the gst info because many people realise much later with almost no evidence left. right now timing probably matters more than arguing with the seller further. was the gst number actually verified anywhere independently or did you only rely on whatever details he sent directly on whatsapp and instagram-
